hi,
yesterday all of a sudden my overdrive jumped out of gear. i took the gearlever switch off and acciddently touched ground with the od cable which resulted in a blown fuse.
i put the fuse back in but still there won´t be any power on the od cable again.
my question now is what could have happened and where do i find the od relais??
thanks in advance
overdrive problems
and does someone maybe have a electrical schematic, if so, you can email me mista_mookie@gmx.de
many thanks in advance again

i already checked those cables, they look fine, do you know where the od relais is located?

The relay should be mounted on the fuse plate under the dash. However, there is only a relay if it is an \'A\' type overdrive, not \'J\' type. The switch goes straight to the overdrive with a \'J\' type.
The wires from the switch should go through a grommet in the plate over the gearbox, so wire damage from that should not occur. However, the wires DO break inside where you can\'t see. The insulation looks OK, but the wire inside breaks. I think this is due to the continual bending when you change gear. It can be tested with a meter, or if you remove the whole wire from the switch down to the connectors underneath, you can then gently pull each wire in turn, holding each end of the same one. If the wire has broken, it will stretch when you pull it.
Bon Chance!
Cheers,
Mike.

Hello Mookie,

I have sent you a schematic. However it is from a MK 1 manual. I think that the only difference is the supply to the relay, this is not fused on a MK 1 but fed from the ignition switch. If you have blown a fuse then the colours I quote may be different with green instead of white as the control supply, the rest will be the same.

I think the MK 2 relay is on the fuse panel above the passenger parcel shelf on the bulkhead. You can identify it by the colours, white, ign supply, brown permanent live, yellogreen relay control from selector switch and yellowpurple supply to overdrive solenoid.

I don\'t think later Mk 2 with the J type overdrive has a relay. Maybe someone can confirm that?

Alec
problem is solved, the cable coming from the gearbox switch, which connects to the cables in the lever was broken inside, now my od is back again

Well done! I have had a number of those wires break in the past, so passing the information on has helped. It\'s great that is it running again.
Cheers,
Mike.
