main beam not working

#1 Post by KellyTurner1990 »

Right. So one day, driving along in the dark down the country lanes I go to turn my main beam on and nothing. Darkness, little panic and just put the normal beam back on. The main beam works if I hold the stalk towards me, but push it back and it doesn't work. What is it most likely to be and what shoukd I take a look at?

Hello Kelly,

probably the dip switch, that's what I would look at first, if not then the side main light switch.

Definitely the main/dip switch. The contacts burn out. Getting scarce but usually turn up on eBay.
Known weakness.

I bet you didn't have relays fitted on the headlights?

Exactly the same happened to us on the Club Triumph 10 countries rally on Darren Sharp's Car.

Once you've replaced the switch, fit relays to take the current away from the switch otherwise you'll burn it out again.

Fit the relays first and see if that does the trick, you may find (as I did with my pi) that the dipswitch is OK still.

Yep! Also put in relays to save the new switch going the same way!

As previously posted.
By dipswitch I mean stalk, they are difficult to get hold of and why bother when you don't know for sure that you need one.
