TedTaylor wrote:As far as the Ford engines went the Trident engine was actually the Ford V6 Essex, the Escort a pushrod 1800cc unit, and the SAAB a V4 British Ford (unless they also made them for Taunus in Germany).
I assume the Saab in question was a Sonnett but, if the Ford V4 engine was the same as that used in the contemporary 96, then I think that Bill is indeed correct in saying that it was the Cologne-built version from one of the smaller Taunus models rather than the British-made unit used in the Corsair, Transit and Zephyr.

And, no, I have no idea as to the answer to your question...

Sure I have seen somewhere that one of the works Triumphs made use of a spare Escort screen. So I thought that might be the answer. The trident the saab and the maxi could also share a screen.

But it looks unlikely since I found some pictures.

More cogitation required

I stand corrected on this one. Checked in my library/archive and in one of my SAAB books it does indeed say that the engine fitted to the SAAB 96 V4 was the German version of the engine  . The Sonnett was a sports car and not really suited to this sort of event ...... though a couple of daft b*****s tried it in a beach buggy!

The Escort screen in the PI was something Jonathan and I discussed a couple of months ago. It was an emergency bodge when the Culcheth/Syer car damaged it's screen and after removal the mechanics found that the spare screen in their set of spares was for a 1300. Classic rally trick to make a loose or poorly fitting screen fit ......... loads of tank tape  You can actiually see this in some of the later pics of the car!

My first clue - Think of the fact that it was three cars.

To try to put you out of your misery another clue.

It usually happened with 3 cars of the same make when posted in the results but you would only notice it if all three cars finished (these did not).

If this does not help I will post what I hope with be the defining clue(s) early this evening :D

They had the same reference numbers - or were listed in the wrong order - or started in the wrong order - or were listed with the wrong crew?

Yes, I'm floundering.

Cheers,
Mike.

Listed with the wrong crews in the standings seems the most likely. That happened to Audi at Le mans a while back didnt it when they finished 1,2,3.

Sorry guys you are all way off. It is actually not at all obscure like that - just not what I had expected and I felt it was quite freaky to have them at the show without realising it.

The answer is actually in the back of at Brian Robins book 'The Great Rally' and I seem to remember spotting it in the pre-event promotion paperwork (not that many people have access to it - come to WCR40). For anyone with access to a World Cup Rally Programme look at page 21, right hand column, half way down.

Another little clue before the big one this evening. Kentish Border (you can Google that). But also think about my other clue and don't forget it only applies to 3 of the cars.

I think you will be banning me from putting up another question!

Is it that all 3 cars were transported on one transporter to get there?

Thinking of all 3 cars on one truck?
