Anyone know what the towing capacity is of a 2.5 pi manual overdrive I know that you shouldn’t exceed 85% of the. Kerb weight of the car. I’ve got a 600 kg caravan it tows it ok but I want to get something a bit bigger maybe up to 900 kg.

I used to tow a Fleetweed Colchester 1300/2 caravan with most of my Triumphs - Mk1 2000/Mk2 2000/ 2500S and years ago a much heavier van with my Mk2 2.5PI.
The weight of the Fleetwood was 820kg with a max permissible weight of 1100kg - although I think you'd be hard pressed to load it to that weight.
The kerbside weight of the Triumph is 1195 kg, but with fuel etc 1255kg. The mass gross weight is 1715kg (that is fully laden with passengers luggage etc).
So a caravan upto 900kg is well within the capabilities of the Triumph and is also quite legal.
All my Triumphs towed very well, and I know of Register members that tow heavier vans than I had with no issues.
I don't think there will be much difference between the 2000 and 2.5PI from a legal aspect, but the PI will be the better tow car powerwise if you don't mind the fuel consumption!
This is from a Mk2 2000 handbook.
