I understand for the Pi, the ideal/correct tyre should be 185 80 13.

I have been pointed in the direction of Maxxis (not an Austin Maxi). They have one side as a white wall. Are there any other contenders that are realistically priced?

These tyres are pretty good. I mount them with the white wall on the inside to give the correct look. They are not directional tyres. Shop around for the best price.

I bought my set of 4 Maxxis 185 80 13 for my PI from My Tyres.
When I last checked Vintage Tyres were significantly more expensive for the same tyre.

I checked on my tyres and it looks like they don’t stock them anymore might be wrong. was looking just in case I need some when my PI is delivered as I was thinking of putting the original wheels and rostyle hubcaps back on.

As you say, it looks like My Tyres now longer stock them. The few stockists of these Maxxis tyres now all seem to be around the £130 mark each - including Vintage Tyres. As with most things, the price of them has risen quite a bit over the last couple of years or so since I bought my last set.

Would 175x80x13 be any good or would the handling be significantly worse as there seems to be a good supply of them and reasonable prices

The biggest mistake people make as 185 80 13 tyres are now hard to find is fitting 185 70 13 tyres which make the wheel look 'under tyred'.
175 80 13 tyres would look better than going down a size on the profile, but being originally for the 2000, from an appearance point of view, they don't look quite a 'chunky' as the 185 tyres on a PI, which always looked to fill the wheel arch better.

The nearest tyre size to the original 185 80 13 is 205 70 13. This gives the nearest rolling circumference to the original and to the visual size.
Here are details from a 'alternative tyre size website' which gives the differences in physical size, measurements and speedo throwout.

Just for comparison purposes, here are the details of a 195 70 13 tyre, which as you can see is greatly different to the original tyre size of 185 80 13, and is not suitable in my opinion as an alternative.

Hi All,
If my memory serves me right,Lee Godfrey had this problem.To get around it,he fitted 14" Stag steel wheels with tyres to suit.He also said that the 13" P.I. trims did fit, just left a 1/2" wider rim edge, which is neither here nor therein they looked as per original. Always worth a thought, you will get Lee on here, and definitely on phrasebook.Hope this helps.
