rocker alignment

#1 Post by valencia »

Hi everyone,
So after my recent German adventure my car got me everywhere I wanted to go and home as well, about 2,200 miles in all but now I'm replacing the damaged rocker shaft and rockers due to the scoring that happened when the oil wasn't getting through.
I've taken all the parts off the shaft and threaded them onto a piece of cord to keep it all in the correct order, I'm using new rockers for 1-6 but 7-12 are still good and the new shaft, but keeping all the old pedestals.
I'm having a problem getting rockers 4 and 5 to sit on the shaft in a position whereby the pushrods have enough clearance not to foul the edge of the cylinder head, if I leave the rockers up against the pedestals the pushrods are pressing on the edge of the head casting and from the image I've shown about how much clearance I need between the rocker and pedestal to free off the pushrods where I have pushed a couple of washers in, number 4 seems to need the most adjustment. I think I have all the components in the correct order and all the others look ok.
Has anyone else come across a problem like this ? The old and new rockers look the same, so I was going to pop in some extra washers to line it all up, is that the best way ?
(and I'll make sure that little screw is in as well as that's how all this started !)
Thanks,
Michael

Something looks very wrong there. All of my rockers are offset - the line from adjuster to contact pad cuts across the 90 degree line at an angle of perhaps 10 degrees, placing each pushrod in the centre of its hole.
Could it be you have a set of rockers from a different engine?

I agree with Clifford re the angle of the rockers in your photo.
Here's a photo of a genuine BL nos 'forward pointing' rocker taken off CWs website which shows the degree of offset which would seem to indicate where your problem lies.

I see what you mean, I have bought the rockers from Rimmers, 3 of each type -but I think I will remove everything and make proper comparisons between the old and new parts, taking measurements. I'll let you know how it goes when I've checked everything.
Thanks to both of you.
Michael.

Looking at your picture when enlarged, it also seems that the other end of the rockers is correspondingly offset so doesn't sit directly over the valve stems.

I've had another look today, there is a difference between the old and new parts, they are not dimentially the same. I've emailed Rimmers to see if they can offer anything better, maybe nos would be better as I imagine these are remanufactured. But if not I might be stuck with them. I wanted to tell them about this problem as I think it's a quality issue that needs resolving for the future.

The other problem I noticed, albeit a minor one is that the locknuts are smaller than the originals, the 1/2 inch a/f spanner is quite loose on the new nuts but a 12mm is spot on, so I'll use the old nuts.

Maybe of some use if you can't get any other originals?

thanks, I'll have a look, they might be a better bet if Rimmers have no nos, they haven't got back to me properly yet but they may well regard them as fit for purpose if no other customers have complained, it's odd how only rockers 4-5 are affected, the rest seem to have lined up pretty well.
