Are the discs and calipers just a straight substitution with no modifications necessary ?

As far as I remember they do bolt straight on, but you will need a minimum of 14" wheels to clear the calipers.

The bolts that hold the discs to the hubs need to be shorter otherwise they bottom out in the hub.
If you are changing the front to Stag I would recommend you consider changing the rear to Stag too otherwise you will over brake the front in relation to the rear.
Stag rears are the same set up but a wider back plate (spaced inboard) to accomodate wider drums and shoes. It does make a difference, you can really feel the back end being pulled down under braking.
You might want to consider changing the hoses to braided ones. Stag brakes give the pedal a little more travel if you stick with the standard 2000/2500 brake master cylinder due to the high volume of fluid you are moving. If you change to braided stainless hoses then the the narrower bore of these bring the pedal travel almost back to standard.
Or, go the whole hog and change the master cylinder to Stag which involves re piping the brakes as its now a dual circuit system.
Hope this helps

Or stick with standard set up with decent pads! Makes all the difference!

I use Mintex 1144 pads on both my cars. Even the MoT man was impressed! I get mine from Rally Design, 01227 792792 part number MLB52M1144, described as a 1144 Princess pad.

If you can find a set of good quality asbestos pads, I think you will notice a marked improvement. I still have a good stock of genuine/original asbestos Lockheed pads, which came complete with shims, anti-rattle springs and pins. Bought a job lot a good few years ago for £3 each box!! I've got asbestos pads in all mine and I never have questioned the braking efficiency even with a caravan on the back.
They all still have their original Triumph front discs fitted which probably have a higher carbon content compared to later aftermarket discs. A high carbon is beneficial for good braking efficiency.
When you consider that modern car manufacturers recommend new discs every third pad change, taking out the upsell aspect of it, the quality of the original Triumph brake discs must have been far superior in quality to todays modern brake discs.

I just put a trailer hitch on my '75 2500S Estate. I was concerned about engine pulling power and never even considered braking performance! I've ordered all the bits to install the Stag dual brake system, but this only makes it safer, not better brakes. So, I started following this thread and frankly I still don't know what to do; Should I add Stag brakes? I have 14" wheels, but don't the late 2500's have the bigger brakes already? In some sites the Stag pads have the same part number as the 2500 pads. How do I determine what calipers I've got?

Dual line brakes were available on CKD built cars. Having towed for many years with a big Triumph, I have found the brakes are well up to the task. If you wish to go down the tandem route, what about this
