No one makes them though perhaps Lloyd will think about it? Problem is the spec of the steel, and they are all four a different shape!

They do have a habit of breaking, primarily the driver's door because it is used so much hence the difficulty of finding replacements.

Personally on the odd occasion I have seen them for sale or broken a car have made a bee line for them because you never know when one will go. Broken as on AFH (very early Mk1) which was temporarily replaced (in 1990) with a bit of leather dog collar trapped/clamped under the broken bits so door did not swing right open. Or I have found on Woody that it has bent back slightly so does not stop door movement properly (but good enough) and as it appears to be spring steel cannot be bent or it will break (heat will make it lose its spring temper).

Trouble is that holding a stock is not much good unless you get your arse into gear and replace them when needed!

Actually Ted, I think the rear ones are not handed but the front ones are, so 'only' 3 different types! Not really relevant though because, as you say, the RH front is like rocking horse droppings anyway!

Cheers,
Mike.

I think it's the rears that are handed? Plus I think they are slightly different on Mk1 versus Mk2 too? (not hooked at the end?) - So that would be 6 different types..........

Anyway, they're all a pretty bad design, they angle at the bottom is too sharp and they fatigue and break off. I'm sure it must be possible to engineer a better solution.
The main problem is all the second hand ones will break pretty soon as well. I found a reasonable looking unpainted Mk1 front one (i.e one that must have been a spare part at some stage) in Andy Harrison's spares at one of the nationals, it broke after about 2 years; now I just revert to opening the door carefully.

Mike, its the other way round (on a mk2 at least). Fronts are same for either side p/n 623825, and rears are 613562 left and 613563 right. That now doubles the chances of finding a front one!

Contrary to popular belief, the front door check strap (for want of a better descriptive term) does anything but!
It does not prevent the door from opening passed its intended position - that is provided by the lug at the rear of the hinge itself.
All the 'check strap' does is provide a bit of a spring to the door as the sharp curve of the 'check strap' passes over the roller when being opened. Once it has passed this position, the 'check strap' serves no useful purpose at all!

I try to collect any old one's I can.
I think we're being a bit hard on these things. Don't forget they're 40 plus years old and done a lot of bending.
Tony.
