I`m trying to change the bush in the bulkhead where the steering column goes,
i`ve undone the knuckle and removed the bolt and the clamp inside the car.
What else has to be removed so i can pull the column out enough to replace the bush

Nothing. Just sit in the seat and give it a good hard yank!
The steering knuckle may need some persuasion to let go.

sorry should of said its a mk1, Done mk2 before without a problem
The knuckle is loose and isn`t holding it, It looks like the whole column need to move but the cowling and indicator are stopping it and can`t see how it comes apart

Hi Andy,
Did this two days ago.
Its not that hard if you know how, I didn't so consulted Mr Haynes.
Basically once you've removed the obvious bits like the steering wheel, remove the horn contactor ring. Two screws and one corner held in by a metal hook. Under the ring by the hook is a screw that holds the indicator stalk on. Remove this screw and withdraw the stalk. Then if you haven't done it already remove the clamp bar from under the dash. The outer column and switchgear should now rotate. Rotate the column by slightly less than 90 degrees in either direction and you should see a screw through the indicator stalk hole. Loosen this then rotate the column the other way to get to the second screw. Once both screws are loose the switchgear should be able to be withdrawn from the dash.
From here on it's pretty self explanatory.
My top tip when reassembling is to put the new bush, seal and metal plate back on the firewall first using top screw only. Then you can wiggle it over the column as you insert it by putting your fingertips between the bush and the firewall.
