Mirrors: doors or wings?

#1 Post by Chris Saunders »

Hi

I’m undecided whether to have door or wing mirrors on my 2500S estate. Up till now I’ve had wing mirrors which I like the look of but are a pig to set up if they get knocked. I’ve had new wings fitted and must decide where to put the mirrors. I’d welcome any thoughts are the subject.

Regards
Chris

Chris,I havn't got a photo, but the rear view mirrors on my Mk1 project will be fixed to the driver/passenger window frame, -saves any drilling and more accessible for adjustment. I checked with others and this solution does seem to work. Think i saw your estate at Yorkshire Triumph last weekend,
cheers,

I’ve had new wings fitted

I hope they aren't fibreglass ones.

I fitted contemporary but non-Triumph swept-back wing mirrors on my 1972 saloon in 1998, to supplement a genuine (but later fitment) screwed-on Triumph door mirror. Big mistake! I could never see anything worthwhile through them, they were forever getting knocked out of position, and they got in the way when I worked in the engine bay. I removed them earlier this year and plugged the holes, and should have done it years ago!

The annoyance is that I now have a (plugged) hole in each wing and some distortion around them. Renovation will have to wait until the car is ready for a re-spray, but I doubt if that will happen in my lifetime.

So guess what my advice would be!

Wing mirrors were not an original fitment on late cars, door mirrors were the order of the day. In my opinion, wing mirrors spoil the line of the car and are also pretty useless for seeing things behind you! Don't drill holes in new wings!!!!!!!!

The wing mounted mirrors on my Mk2 look great - but are completely useless.

I'd go for door mounted mirrors.

Doors, for all the above reasons.

If you want originality, then go for the door mirrors. The 'S' doesn't look right with wing mirrors.
However the original type of door mirror is pretty useless with a flat lens; I go for a convex to get a wider field of rearward vision.

I have a twelve inch wide driving mirror,in which you can see everyone in the car and everyone round about   but also have original wing mirrors. :)
Most of everything in these cars can be seen with the nod of the head, unlike moderns, even with the best of mirrors imho.

Hi all
Sounds like a resounding vote for door mirrors, eh? I agree with the general consensus that the wing mirrors are pretty useless and as you point out Charles, it'll be a shame to drill the new (steel) wings and spoil the lines. Think I'll try and find a nice pair of door mirrors, maybe convex (thanks JD).

Laurence, yes it was my car you saw at YT; I think you're very brave parking your beautiful car next to my pile of rust (hope rust's not infectious, ha ha). Must say I was very impressed with your Mk1; you should be very proud.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
