Hi. since ive had my 2000, ive found she "likes to drink the fuel". data shows about 300-350 miles per tank, but the best ive ever had is 250, usually 200. im not heavy footed, there are are no leaks and the car was tuned etc last september. anything else i could look at?

Brakes binding?
Choke cable sticking?
Thermostat stuck open?
Float chamber dripping?
Fuel pump diaphram leaking?

tyres are 30psi, checked weekly.
small tool box in boot.
no roofrack.

wheels turn freely,
choke fully in and moves freely,
engine is warm in less than 5 mins so think thats ok,
carbs seem dry externaly,
might have a very slight leak on fuel pump as engine block is very clean below pump! but its never empty of fuel in morning.

thanks for the check list lads. will order a new fuel pump kit just incase. dont think its leaking into engine as the oil is always spot on for colour and viscosity ( )

forgot to mention... its not got an overdrive box, just 4 speed.

What type of driving are we talking here?

The fuel consumption between both of our cars can be anything from 17-33mpg, 17 being either car around town, work and back, 6miles each way in the depths of winter, 19-20 in the summer. Both cars do low 20s towing our largish and fairly heavy trailer. The PI does 28 or so on 70mph runs and the estate did 28.7mpg over 2400+ miles of the RBRR in 2010 and 2012 (honestly it was the same both times).
The estate will top 30 if you are more careful, achieving 33.4mpg over 204miles back from Kent at a steady 50-60mph.

not many long distance constant runs, more urban type runs. today tho, did 100 miles at a steady 60 and used just under 1/4 tank. that seemed better.

I wouldn't rely too much on the accuracy of the fuel gauge. Fill the tank, do your trip and refill tank and see how much you've actually used for the milage driven.
