Hello Friends

I am going to do a full restoreation of My PI saloon. The idea is to upgrade and do slight alterations to get this car to a realiable and enjoyable car to drive in todays conditions. I will keep the engine as i Love PI's and convert from auto to manual box. I will be putting Stag brakes on and Stag wheels. Here is what i have got to work with.

This sounds like an interesting project. I quite like the look of the early Stag 14" steel wheels with stainless steel trims fitted to a Pi(didn't the facelift Pi's have them anyway), giving more options on wider tyres, ie:185x70, 195x70 etc. A more modern set-up while keeping it looking original. I'm a bit of a turn coat really

Turncoat? Not at all Lee, this is what I intend doing with my pi, I have the wheels and some NOS trims. Sooooooo much better than resorting to Stag/S alloys (uurgh!)

The facelift pi wheels were still 13" but with all stainless trims rather than the black highlights, a similar thing happened with the trims on mk1 and 2 Stags.
The only limiting factor to tyre choice is the 5" width to the steel Stag rims, 185 ought to be the width limit really.

BTW Roy Gascoigne's beautiful sapphire pi featured at the NEC and December SIXappeals cover car has 14" Stag wheels and trims....Looks good doesn't it?

Steel stags wheels are a bit thin on the ground.I have the original wheels and trims in stock but I don't want then so are for a sale. I don't think that the stag/s alloys look to bad so that is what I have gone for. I have to have 14" due to the stag callipers. I am also converting from single to twin circuit brake system.

My pi has Stag front and rear brakes and the dual circuit master cylinder and servo from the same (it also has the Stag alloys sadly).

It does indeed Colin I think I'll bear this option in mind for mine

On my first Pi I had fitted the Stag/S alloys in place of the 13" steels and I just couldn't get to thinking that they suited it. I changed back to steels very quickly. IMHO the Stag/S alloys - although a very handsome wheel it has to be said - are more modern and cutting edge than the steels, and just don't appear to go with the 2000 or Pi variants. I think perhaps it's the lofted ride height on the 'S' that makes it work somehow

I love the 'S' alloys on my '72 ex-PI. I fitted them about 30 years ago and still remember the pleasure of escaping from rattly PI wheel trims vainly trying to disguise themselves as alloys!

I quite agree, David OK, I have to admit to (a) a vested interest, currently having 'S' alloys on the PI and also (b) an opinion that the original PI wheeltrims look superb as well. The challenges of obtaining modern tyres of the correct size and rating for a PI, however, really do necessitate 14" rims or larger, and as Lee has pointed out, 14" Stag steels are not always that easy to come by, at least in complete undamaged sets...

Yes, I thought long and hard about WCR-spec Minilites, but came to the conclusion that the all-silver finish just wouldn't look right against the dark body colour. Hence 'S' alloys unless/until I can persuade myself (and my pocket) that a conversion to five-stud hubs and Rover P5B/Jensen Interceptor-style real Rostyles is in order...

That said, when Ted Taylor and I were going through some of the original BL publicity material in the early stages of preparing for WCR40, I noted a contemporary ad for one of Triumph's suppliers showing Paddy Hopkirk alongside his 'company car' - a PI fitted with the dark grey Minilites with polished rims as used on the Mk1 PI works rally cars, which really did look good against a dark body colour. Get the feeling I may have missed a trick there...

MMMMM..............this was an option I contemplated to!.
However, was also talking to a mate once who said he knows somebody that makes one off wheels and could make 15" rostyle alloys.................but for how much I dare not ask............would be nice though.

As others I not a great lover of the S alloys and prefer the rostyle look.
