Come on, Alan, the MG Maestro was a superb car, noticeably faster than the XR3i in the traffic-light grand prix, ultra reliable, excellent road holding and very fast. You may not remember them with affection, but I do - and, let me tell you, the insurance companies know all about them and how fast they are too! Now, just let me get my hands on an MG Maestro Turbo...

My Mum and Dad had two Austin Allegro Estates in succession - a series one
<br>(chrome bumper) in plain white, and a series two (black bumper) in some

Why is it that our parents always drove really sad cars?
My Mum\'s history ranges from allegro\'s, Maestro\'s, 993cc VW Polo whilst my Dad suffered from total boredom and drove Ford Granada\'s from a MKI Consul (like the Sweeney car) and had a Granada every 2 years until 1994..............
I remember one year he borrowed a Rover SD1 V8 VDP for a weekend and I thought \"hello, something more interesting!\". He took it back on the Monday morning and then ordered a new Granada. D\'oh!!
The only thing I can think is that once I left home and had my own cars, they both started buying interesting stuff! (I wonder if they only did that once they knew I would not be around to \"borrow\" them?)
Mum\'s poor history has now all be wiped out by the recent purchase of a Supercharged C Class Mercedes!! I wonder if I can get the keys off her???.................

Ah, on to parents\' cars now, are we? <IMG>
Well, surprisingly, my father had only 4 cars from the time he got married in 1943 until he eventually stopped driving in 1974:
1) 193? to 1952 Rover 14 (BTD 223) complete with leaky roof. I remember this car with affection, but only just!
2) 1952 to 1964 Austin A40 Somerset (KDK 611) - bought new. I remember him arriving home in this, very proud. There was a very long waiting list for cars in the years after the war. It served the family well for 12 years, and then a neighbour for some years after that, but when I subsequently drove one I wasn\'t all that impressed.
3) 1964 to 1972 Austin A55 Mk 2 Cambridge (7300 TW) with column gear change (I have never seen another one with column change). This was fun to drive, if underpowered, because the handling was so awfull! My brother always said it felt like driving a coach and four.
4) 1972 to 1974 Wolseley 18/85 Automatic (TWC 585E). Luxury, with leather seats. Caused me to learn how to rebuild Borg Warner 35 automatic gearboxes. I\'ve never looked back.
My father\'s first car was, I think, an Austin 7 (don\'t know exactly which model) after which he had a Swift Tourer. Apparently he was very proud of the Swift but he had a lot of trouble with it and at one stage had to have a complete engine rebuild. It had only 4 digits on the odometer and the salesman lied (as they do) about how many tens of thousands of miles it had done!
My mother had:

mini sprite 1984 124,000miles, rusty as hell but was quick for a 998, good engine
toyota glanza (starlet here) 1.3 turbo intercooler, 167bhp of jap reliable-ness, all the toys in it but a boring drive for a quick car, prone to using clutchs quick!!!
mazda mx5 1.6, super car, handling reputation is correct, reliable cheap to fix & easy to work on, recommend one if you dont need the space of a hatchback <IMG>
cars i still have & own
mini 86, rust free, 998cc daily driver, stripped out, full cage, grp panels, building a new engine for her at the moment when funds allow
triumph 2500s wont sell it, love how smooth they are, needs a little work but want it back on the road to go to ireland & back nxt autumn!!!!
mini clubman project, 1977 needs some work, its only a bare shell shotblasted & primed & box\'s of parts, will be a 1330cc turbocharged when i get round to it

Hmm, have had quite a few motors in 13 years of driving. Listed in order, they are:

Oh yeah, the parents seemed keen on Allegros - a 1300 super was the family car for a long time. I think having us kids meant my dad had to downgrade from his Dolomite 1850.
My Mum had an allegro estate in the late \'80s, hand painted (really well) in orange, but with a black roof , and a black and red stripe following the window line along each side, starskey and hutch style. I loved it but my brother used to hide if we passed his mates in it. Wonder if there are any on ebay.....
Funny enough, they\'ve had some really nice motors since we left home.

I have also bought and broken or bought and sold on, many other Triumphs including Spitfires, TR7\'s and mainly 2000/2500 and 2.5PI\'s.
Now have - 2005 BMW 330cd, 2006 Renault Megane Grand Scenic - those are the everyday cars. Then currently as fun cars I have 1973 TR6, 1973 Stag, 1969 Mk1 2000 saloon auto, 1969 Mk1 2.5PI saloon, 1969 Mk1 PI estate auto, 1972 Mk2 2.5PI saloon and finally my latest acquisition - 1974 Mk2 2.5PI saloon.
Yes - I have a big garage ! But also a mate who provides workshop storage and an elderly father-in-law who does not use his garage !
And yes, my wife is VERY understanding !!!
