Petrol tank pick up

#1 Post by simon.williams »

It wasn’t blocked, but is this the normal design? I would have thought it should stick up at least a bit in the bottom of the tank to avoid picking up dirt? Thank you?

Hi Simon,

This fits to a union on the bottom of the tank? I guess we don't really know how far this union protrudes into the tank. I have at least one spare saloon tank at home where the union has come off. I'll try to remember to have a look when we get back home after next weekend.

Cheers,
Mike.

This is just the union.
A pice of pipe protrudes into the tank.
If you stick a piece of welding rod into the hole, you will find/feel you are in a pipe.

Thanks all, after draining it (twice) and poking all sorts of fun things in it, I know that is not the problem. I am now betting on pump cavitation against the PRV.

The only way is up!

Hello Simon,

I take it that you have renewed the fuel filter, however have a quick look at the rubber hose that connects the tank union to the pipe to the fuel filter in case it's perished and collapsed? I know it is a pain to drain the tank again.

Thanks Alec, that bit is all good. I’m 99% confident that my new PRV will solve the problem. Apart from the original fuel lines, which all blow through, and the injectors themselves which spray cones, its the only thing that hasn’t been replaced!

Hello Simon,

OK, just trying to think of possibilities.

Have you not tried adjusting the pressure relief valve to prove the theory or disconnect its outlet hose to see if fuel is flowing?

New PRV arrives today. But I should have done what you said! Still, the old one was well «old ». Peace of mind and all that.

160€ on a new PRV was well spent. Should have done this 3 months ago, but I think I’m there now. Around 110 lbs of pressure (thanks Mike, the guage is working fine!).

Touch wood but now the injection system should be tip top!

Thanks for all the advice! Do I get my Lucas badge now?

(Alec, keen to see photos of how you did your pressure guages - I would like an early warning system!).
