Rumbly rear…

#1 Post by simon.williams »

Not in a hurry but my next job will be sorting out some rumbles from the rear of the car. Nothing is obviously loose, the shocks are new. I would imagine changing bushes and mounts will be required. Do you know which are most likely to be the culprits (everything will be at least 20 years old, and potentially much more!).

I am going to try and enjoy just driving the car a bit now of course!

Hello Simon,

take a close look at the outboard mounts where the sub frame attaches to the body. Basically they are a mount which is in shear to a central pin. When the bond between the pin and the bush fails, the subframe rests against the body and could be the source of the rumble.
The rear most bushes (Behind the differential) on the subframe are in compression, so even if tired are unlikely to be the problem.
The bushes in the swinging arms also fail which spoils the handling but again probably not the source of the rumble.
