Instruments

#1 Post by simon.williams »

Hi, are the 2000 instruments identical to the PI - I’m going to take a punt on a second hand set if I can get it cheap… I want to try the rev-counter (which seems to be the same, Smiths, 6cl, 100rpm -ve earth..) and the temp guage which are still out of action on mine.

The guy says they were working when he took it off…

The 2000 only has two large instruments, a speedo and a three part voltmeter, temp gauge and fuel gauge. The PI has the set up you show. They are plug and go at the main plug and socket about 6" from the back of the instruments. Only thing is, the prefacelift and facelift instruments have different plugs, and the tacho is wired differently so not easily interchangeable.

Thanks Charles, it does look very similar to my PI set up, but hard to tell without actually looking at the contacts.

Early facelift model dash looms from the gauges had the same rubber plugs as the prefacelift dash and are interchangable, before the hard white plastic plugs / connector blocks were introduced.
The Stag and the 2500 wood dash pieces look similar, but they are noticeably different when put side by side.
It's worth just verifying it actually is a 2500 dash and instruments not Stag as most seliers don't know the difference! In the UK it's easy to spot if its a Stag one with the 'brake' warning light for the tandem system on the dash - but export models of the 2000 /2500 also had it. It's also with checking the rev counter is a 6 cylinder version from the small numbers at the base of the dial face. Manual versions of the speedo had '840' within these letters / numbers whereas autos had '1000'.
However, I know speedos aren't generally changed if converted to manual or vice versa with no noticeable differrnce with the reading (which wasn't particularly accurate anyway!).

Hi Simon,
is the dash pictured the one you're going to buy? If so, it's certainly not a Stag item, because that would have four small dials. And from the type set and the arrangement of the numbers on the gauges I'd say that's a pre-facelift setup.
Best regards

Hi, yes its the one I am about to buy. Vendor says its from a 2000, but he may be wrong. The rev counter does say 6cl, I would intend to swap its inners with my current dials/glass, and also do the same with temp guage. I don’t need the rest, although some of the bulbs may come in handy for spares. Its 100€, so not an enormous risk.

Are the dials of your guages different? I thought your car is PFL as well?

Hi Simon,

The speedo will probably be different. The number on the dial face, bottom right is the TPM (Turns Per Mile) and is probably 1000 for a 2000 (and a Stag) and 840 for all the 2.5/2500 range. Using the wrong one will show the wrong speed etc. The tachos are much the same but I think the early ones are curremt sensed (wire from IGN 12V to the tacho and another wire from the tacho to the coil). Later ones are voltage sensed with just one wire from thge coil/points junction.

I hope this helps!
