I soldered up the poppet valves on the last 'S' I had. As long as you get a good fillet of solder right the way round each valve there should be no leakage! Everything being brass meant it was an easy solder to do.

Cheers, Mike.

That thought did cross my mind Mike... now you have said that yourself that may well be the way to go....did you notice any improvement on doing that ? How are things going with the P.I.?
As an afterthought, i assume you left the valves in place, and soldered around them, as oppose removing them from the flap?
Cheers, Nige.

Hi Nige,

With 'plain' discs the engine seem more responsive, especially on the 'overrun'. I don't remember if I did them on or off the carbs (it was a long time ago!), I'm not sure how much access there is when on the carbs. It is important to get a good fillet of solder all the way round or they might still leak air!

No progress on the PI recently, but I'm hoping to get back onto it when it warms up a bit in the garage. Whenever Six Appeal arrives I get a bit more incentive.

I know what you mean with the cold - i work outside so the last thing i fancy doing this time of year is more time in the cold, the garage, even though the garage is not quite as baltic as outside ! Ok, interesting thoughts. Im not sure how you could of done a thorough job insitu - i had a look at that , as at the minute the elephants trunk is off for a view inside.
I think my plan will be to buy the complete overhaul kit from Burlens , and if , as their image shows, their flaps have the valves in , i will solder them up before fitting - leaving my original ones - original. I am still chasing the fact as to why my car runs out of steam uphill - since someone suggested the jets may have solidified crud in them due to the 14 years off the road - hence the feeling of ' not enough fuel' flow when needed, and virtually everything else has been checked or at the very least renewed - at great expense (!) - might as well do the carbs as well !!! The only bit that concerns me is the Auto cable setting - having just had a total rebuild, i need to make sure it goes back as they set it.... plenty photos, tippex markers etc.....Hopefully with Spring on the way work on the P.I. will lift off again 👍
