I just have a new alternator ,Lucas, and I need to know what is the bolt size for the adjustment bolt, as it's threaded through the alternator casting. My old unit was a plain hole. Is it unc?
Thanks

Re: Alternator
I think it is 5/16" UNC. Coarse as the thread is in the alloy frame of the alternator. It should have a locknut behind it too - I think!
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Alternator
Thanks Mike, I didn't want to order bolts when I wasn't sure of the size, I've done that too often in the past and ended up with a collection unused whitworths for my S1 Land Rover.

Re: Alternator
If you can, check what the parts book say for that bolt and then check what the suppliers say what it is. Triumph has a method of specifying a bolt/setscrew which would tell you the size, thread type and length. The problem is to find out the details of that method!
I too have a S1 Land Rover (1949 80") so have a real mix of UNF, UNC, BSF and BSW bits around!

Re: Alternator
Thanks Mike,
You're quite correct, I've had 5/16 unc off Ebay and they're spot on, it's good to have the proper sizes, and as you say, the Land Rovers tend to be a mixture of fittings.
I wanted it correct as I'm off on a long continental journey soon, and i don't want any problems.

Re: Alternator
I've tried to restore my 1949 Land Rover to as near-original as is financially viable, so it's virtually all back to BSF and BSW fittings - with a smattering of BA sizes too, even odd BA sizes!
Good luck with the continental trip. I am actually in Normandy as I type this and I hope all goes well for your trip.
Cheers Mike.
