Sounds right to me! In my automatics (whether the Triumphs or more moderns) I only use D, and never change down manually, although the kickdown works if needed.
The degree of throttle movement required for kickdown can be adjusted on the linkage under the car on a Mk1, and the kickdown cable on the Mk2. The measurements for the correct adjustment are in the Workshop Manual I believe.

THANK YOU JOHN , some sense at last. Right, i am soooo glad you posted that back. So now i am getting somewhere. Now i KNOW something is not right. I may sleep tonight !!!! So , in short, you just select 'D' from a standing start, and ' just drive normally' , accelerate to go forwards, ease off to backoff. Simple. And , i assume, that way of driving gets you past 50 mph without too much stress or strain ( on car or driver) !!!! In other words, in ' D' , i should be able to leave my garage, and go where ever i need to go, inclines, levels whatever it may be, and do that at ' a normal pace' - i.e. not crawling up an incline at 30 mph....

So had the call today - 'box is out, stripped. They found reverse and top clutch bands (quote) 'burnt right out'. Along with the usual seals and gaskets all shot. Still would not state that is my issue, but to me it sounds absolutely it. Top gear clutch band burnt out - i would assume thats why i have no top end !!!! The burnt out reverse has thrown me , dont know how a reverse band would burn out? Plus, not sure how ANY clutch band would burn out whilst idle for years - but there it is - could be they have been worn since purchase, the long lay up may have stuck them, then me trying to drive it may have polished them off🤷 im happy though that a number of faults have been found, ' box overhaul justified.

Sounds like progress Nige! Apparantly, auto boxes do not like long periods of being laid up / inactivity - or so a local auto gearbox repair place told me.....

Hi John, yes thats exactly what i have found out since this all started, they do not take kindly to being idle. I wish now i had not wasted a year being chased up different garden paths with most people around me telling me it is an engine problem - i always suspected the gearbox from the start - when in reality the only real issue that we found with the engine itself was carb imbalance !!! But anyhow yes as you said hopefully some big progress - i however still await the confirmation from them after completion ' this is now a different car ' , but i remain hopefull, as it fits the issue.
As an aside, still need to get around to the valuation of the car with you at some point.....

Well, its back, and yes i can certainly tell there is a difference with it, so the rather large bill was worth taking on the chin  . So its had reconditioned converter, all new bands, seals, kickdown cable etc,and as an extra i asked them to fit a new rear crank seal / gaskets as required and a billet steel driveplate, all suppiled from CW - so a proper gearbox overhaul ( and bill to match) but, it had to be done . It now actually maintains speed up a hill !!!!! So yes, a marked improvement - so the loss of power as soon as an incline was met was down to a burnt out 3rd (D) clutch band, and NOT an engine issue. So that, i am happy with - as it was what i suspected from the start.
However - 🤔 whilst there is a marked difference there, i still seem to struggle to actually accelerate uphill, or even on the straight, above 60 ish. This now leads me to something the guys that test drove the car before taking things apart , they thought the accelerator felt tight, or stiff.....i then remembered the HS6 cumbersome throttle linkage woes , mainly with the nylon roller bearing/ cam pick up - which mine has obviously the very same traits - cam cutting into the nylon bush etc. I am now wondering could that be it? I think i lagged it all in grease years ago when it was on the road - probably dried out now....i went out the other evening, placing my hand on the throttle, and it does feel stiff....i wonder !!!!! I am also aware of Dylan Days' mod on this - i need to email him, as in the April issue which shows the bracket, it would appear it is only suited to Manuals, as only one cable hole is shown by what i can make out... being an Auto, i need two cable holes....
