Door and windcsreen rubbers

#1 Post by Rod 2500S » Sun Mar 21, 2021 2:25 am

hi all
I'm now ready to start putting the car back together after a full respray and I need primarily door and front and rear screen rubbers plus window trim and seals.
Can anyone recommend a supplier?
Cheers
Rod

I know they would be very difficult to find, but personally, I'd try first to find genuine nos rubber seals, as long as they are still packaged and have been kept well. My experience of aftermarket door and rear window seals isn't particularly good. The compound of the rubber is a lot softer than the original, but being a lot more pliable, the front door rubbers have a tendency to drag on the stainless B pillar cover and fold over on themselves, especially if the door has dropped very slightly over the years. The rears also drag on the door aperture in front the quarter light, and again fold over on themselves. The aftermarket seals don't have the moulded 90 degree bend at the top corner by the B pillar, and they have to be cut at 45 degrees and glued to look correct, but this invariably isn't successful. The join of originals was in the centre of the bottom run and was covered by a material reinforced tape.
Rear screen rubbers again are very soft, and when fitted, the weight of the glass had a tendancy to cause the outer edge of the seal to sit proud of the body.
However Chris Witors windscreen seals that he supplied 10 - 15 years ago were good quality and a similar rubber compound to the originals - however I don't know whether he uses the same supplier now.
Maybe the compound of aftermarket seals has improved recently but I would still go for nos if at all possible.

Thanks Johnnydog
Been to CW's site and he has everything except the door window outer seals (Listed but out of stock)
Waiting on a local supplier but he's not answering the phone.
The profile he has for the door seals is indeed different to the OEM ones on the car (updated apparently in 09/19) but I can't seem to find the exact profile even on COH Baines catalogue which is huge.
Keep you posted
Cheers

Recently had a very experienced fitter do my front and rear estate screens with CW rubbers.

The front was fine and he's done a cracking job

The rear tailgate screen proved to be a bit of a challenge.... In the end 5/8th of an inch was cut out and the rubber then rebonded. Cross section shows the new rubber is not identical to the original and there's a part of the moulding in the screen groove which actually hinders fitment

The chap spent the best part of 2 days on the car but then he's about as OCD as me so it really is a great finish

Hi Rod,
COH Baines used to supply CW in the past, although I'm not certain if that is still the case. I bought some fronts direct from them many years ago and the rubber was quite firm just like the originals - not the softer rubber that seems to be the issue with remanufacturered ones.
Over the years, when I have scrapped a door, if there were any good sections of the rubber seal, I cut them out and kept them - better to try joining an original than buying a reproduction imho, especially with the modern bonding adhesives currently available.
I could take a photo of an original door rubber profile for your info if that would help.

Here is a picture of the profile of an original door seal...it's an old one which I have cut to show it clearly.

Thanks mate
I have some of that on the rear doors, the fronts have been changed to the one I posted earlier
I'm going to go back to the original solid one in your pic.

Maybe the softer rubber makes them easier to mount. Still if they don't seal properly then moot point really
My son mounted two front doors and said it was a b....d of a job.
I'm also waiting on CW supplies to come in for the window rubbers kit he has CW9098
Then we have 4 doors to redo hot water and heat gun will be busy I think
Wish us luck
Life is better in a Triumph PI
