Hello. I have a 2000 currently fitted with hs6 carbs and pancake air filters. Looking to replace the filters with the original set up if anyone has an air filter box.
Thankyou
Joe

Hi Joe,
To establish the correct air filter box, you need to confirm exactly which carbs you have as it would appear that your car hasn't got the correct carbs for its year. Being SU's, they could be HS4's or HS6's which have different air filter boxes.
HS4 are smaller, but only have 2 mounting holes per carb, which are opposed at 10/4 and 8/2 o'clock if that makes sense. The air filter box looks the same as the Stromberg type, but are different as the holes are in a slightly position. Stromberg filters and HS4 filters are not the same.
HS6's have 4 mounting holes per carb.
HS6's usually have the 'elephants trunk' type of collector box with a flexible hose to a remote air filter canister fitted to the right of the radiator. This was because the engine on later cars was tilted to the offside with spacers to leaving less room for the original air filter box.
Needless to say the inlet manifold is different between all models.

Re: Original air filter box wanted
Thankyou for that. Yes I'm going to need it sorted to get it running right. It's hs6 carbs. Basically a 2500s set up but on a 2000 so it wont run correctly with pancake air filters.
I need to somehow find an airbox to mount like the later cars so I can get fresh air to the carbs so it runs correctly.

Have you been able to check the engine number just to confirm you have a 2000 engine? Looking at your current filters, the engine does seem to be tilted over more than I would have expected for a pfl 2000, and as it has been fitted with HS6's, maybe it has been replaced with a 2500 engine? If it is a 2000 engine with HS6's, depending on which needles are fitted, it may be worth speaking to Chris Witor for his advice on the best needles to suit your setup.
The 'elephant trunk' air collector boxes don't often come up for sale either....

Checking all of the numbers on the engine and head it is still a 2000. It's going to take alot of tinkering to get it right. I'll speak to Chris and a triumph specialist is going to have a look and hopefully come up with a plan to get it right. I'll keep you updated.
Thanks for all the advice.

Re: Original air filter box wanted
A good starting point would be the needles from a late 2000 as they also used twin HS6s. I can't look up the needle type at present for you as I am (still) stranded in Normandy, having been here since the 5th March! With any luck we might get home sometime in June. Mind you, I said that about May too.
I think that the wrong needles will make a bigger difference to the running that pancake filters will.
I may have a spare air collector for HS6s. As already said, I can't check until back in the UK.
HS6 carbs had 3 fixings to the air collector (with at least 2 if not 3 different bolt lengths) and 4 onto the manifold.
If the engine is too far to the right , it is not difficult to re-drill the engine cross member to move it to the left as standard for later cars. Beware though that the battery tray was smaller in later cars to give a bit more room.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Mike.

Thanks for that information that should help. I've found a box. Good luck getting home.
