I would have thought that a engine sump plug would have been taken out a bit more frequently than a gearbox drain plug, and therefore it ought to come out without the effort described above. I think that as long as the Stilsons are of the correct size (not overly big) and the jaws are adjusted correctly, you will shift it.

Hello everyone. Stillsons got it. The head was destroyed obviously been an issue for a while. Problem now is the oil filter. That wont move so I'm going to go and by a removal tool. I've tried all the other tricks like a belt etc. Hopefully I'll get there. This has been one long winded oil change.

Glad you got sorted with the Stilsons! Is it the standard paper filter horizontally on the block, or a screw on type from an aluminium adaptor?
It sounds like you have a screw on type. On reassembly they only need to be barely hand tight as they seem to tighten up over time and are then tighter to remove come next oil change. A smear of oil on the seal to adaptor face is a good idea when fitting the new filter, but this can lead to overtightening of the filter as the seal to adaptor face moves easier when contact is made (if that makes sense?!?)

Hello all. What a palava. As mentioned before I finally got the sump plug out but my twist off oil filter was stuck. Borrowed some oil filter removal tools and after about five minutes I put a hole in the filter. Quickly got it to the mechanics just around the corner and my new oil had all but gone.
Luckily the mechanic got the old filter off and refilled, put the new oil and filter on.
All done now but a bit of a nightmare. Definitely going to change the sump plug on the next oil change.
Now time for a coolant flush.

For information, the gearbox drain plug as fitted has a small magnet to collect swarf and has the same thread as the engine sump plug. It also has a 'proper' hex head!

So if you can get hold of one of those, it's an easy fix.

Best advice, I recently fitted one as a drain plug to a diff I rebuilt. Then I purchased four moor and replaced the two in the gearbox, the sump, and the diff input.
I now use an allen key fitting for a socket wrench which gives me a good leaver to tighten/undo them. They are readily available at my local bearing supplier in Australia and don't cost a lot. If you fancy a magnetic one wrap some insulated wire around the plug and attach to a small battery, magnetise the the hex one.
