I have found a complete set of calipers and disc of the front and rear drums from a STAG.

So after a complete revision of the sealings new calipers in the front and new rear calipers I mounted it on the car.
As usely it doesn't stay only by changing the brake but also a few brake lines has to go.
The only thing which was not easy to set up was the handbrake. It fit but I had a lot to do before the handbrake lever works well.

I had already fitted a new headmaster cilinder from Rimmer (which is the same as STAG).

After the first test run I am very happy. It stop a lot better and give me more the feeling of an modern car.

I'm in the process of doing this upgrade to my car. ...have I understood correctly, to change the rear backplates I undo the drive coupling and the 6 bearing holder nuts and then withdraw the drive shaft to then be able to remove the backplate?

Yes. Remove the entire driveshaft, and the back plate just lifts off the six studs. Might need a little wiggle.

Don't forget the brake pipe & handbrake cable!
It may help to disconnect the hydraulic line at the point where it meets the flexi-pipe on the swinging arm, and remove the back plate complete with wheel cylinder & brake pipe. The brake pipe screws into the cylinder at an angle and can be a bu99er to undo if it is corroded/rounded off, as access is more difficult when its on the car.

Thanks Alan and Dave....I've already undone the pipe......sort of! Already decided to make replacement copper pipes with brass end fittings and had twigged that I can leave the wheel cylinder attached.

Reading an earlier post, can I use my 2500 handbrake arms or do I need to replace those with Stag items?

I seem to recall they are different stag to 2000.

Looking on part numbers, the Stag ones are 519070 and 519071............ but I think the 2000 ones are different, but can't find my part number book to look it up.

If you have access to part number books, check the numbers and see if they match the stag ones above. If they match....... bingo, if they are different, then take that as a different item I think.

When you come to replace the wheel cylinders (assuming they're not already on the Stag backplates), there is a cunning special tool to press the circlips into position. Having done this by hand in the past as well as with the tool, I can confirm it is much easier with the tool and you stand a better chance of not having to retrieve the cliclip from the depths of the garage!

Although the 2000 brakes in good standard form are perfectly adequate for road use, I think fitting a Stag setup make good sense. It is something I plan to do when the PI has a major restoration, sometime next year. Or so!

Cheers,
Mike.

Yes, I've bought the special tool. I borrowed one from a friend a couple of years ago when I did the cylinders on my MG1300 and can confirm it's awesome!

Sounds like I need to investigate the handbrake arms a little more...
