Looking for the online version of Six Appeal

#1 Post by Hugh »

I must be going blind.

I have just received Issue 199 here in Australia and have read on Page 4 how to find the online version. I have logged in to this Forum as a member so assume I am in the members only section of this forum but where is the link to the online version so I can try out the password and view it on line?

Can somebody email me a screen shot with the appropriate link highlighted please.

Regards

Hugh,

You were not logged in as a member, only the admin team can do that so that we can keep control of things!

I have changed you to Register Member, so now if you look down the forum list you should now see "member only section".

In here you will find the link to the digital version of Sixappeal.

The latest version of SIXappeal has not been uploaded yet. Normally, it is uploaded about a week after the paper copies are due to arrive which is typically the first Monday of the month of publication for UK members and a few days later elsewhere and so with the October issue being published on Monday 6th October, it would normally be uploaded tomorrow.

Unfortunately, it is going to be delayed. I have been away for a short holiday last week and the artwork necessary for the on-line version has not yet been created. Things have not entirely been to plan of late and it is going to take me a few days further to do it. Tedious things like the aftermath of moving house and a couple of close encounters with various accident and emergency services... :(

I'll post an update when it is available and on-line

Thanks Alan and Kevin,

Now I see the missing link and found the path to enlightenment.
I'll just have to keep a list of passwords now so I can pass on the paper copies to make room on my magazine shelves.
You have no idea how much space a 40 year collection of various magazines takes up. My AUSOM (Apple Users Society of Melbourne) magazine now lives in a pdf file folder as it comes in each month and it is in cloud where the paper copy is B&W. Would be nice to do it with Six Appeal too. Some of my Railway history mags now come on DVD as back issues.

Interesting thought... I have a complete "editor's archive" of every issue of SIXappeal; it fills 2 draws of a tightly packed filing cabinet. I have pdf files of every issue of SIXappeal since I became editor, (and all the source material) but they are not really in a usable form for everyday use for a few reasons. First, the pdf is a "print-ready" file, so it has "bleeds" where the colour runs off the edge of the page for trimming and has all the printers markup on it, like job description, trimming marks, colour and density bars and then to make life a bit more interesting, each issue is 6 pdf files - one for each section of the magazine (8 pages) and one for the covers, although I usually simplify things a bit and combine sections where I can. Each issue is around 150 Mbytes in size - hence the reason that it is necessary to first convert the pdf into a different format before it can then be converted into the page turning online copy.

Before I took over, my predecessor, John Cottrell had started with creating an electronic copy, but not in a pdf format and prior to that, all the actual sub editing and pre-press work was done by the printer who used something like Quark to create the print files. I have some of the output CDs for this, but unfortunately, Quark is now obsolete and is one of the few data formats that just cannot be sensibly interpreted by anything else, so we can't do much with those. I wonder why I keep them, actually...

Presumably these will be QuarkXPress files? QuarkXPress is still very much alive and kicking, currently at version 10. Even if they're relatively early QuarkXPress files it wouldn't be a big deal to resurrect them and get them converted to PDF.

That is interesting to read. I had thought it had died years ago and been replaced with things like InDesign and the rest of the Adobe product range. There is an assumption on my part that it is Quark and I can't remember why! I may have looked at some of the binaries and seen a copyright message or something.

I'll keep hold of the discs in the archive...

It's certainly the case that InDesign overtook XPress to become the market leader by quite a large margin quite a few years ago now, but Quark are still very much alive and kicking and a significant proportion of that market is still using XPress.

Many people - myself included - maintain installations of both. Personally, I much prefer InDesign and don't use XPress much these days at all - when I do it's mostly to maintain or update legacy documents.

If I can help at all please get in touch.
