ebay is where I found Stag stuff and is usually the cheapest source when it gets listed. This will also give you contacts for Stag specialists though these can also be found in the internet and will usually be more expensive than ebay but less chance of having to wait for stuff to turn up.

As usual be careful when buying to make sure you get good stuff, or stuff that is not so kna**ered that it cannot be rebuilt!

Crikey...............did not realise you been on rally yet

When you bringing it round?

Also agree that original brakes work fine.
I have towed with the MK1 2000 estate and stopped with no issues and can vouch that the MK1 PI brakes on both my cars pull up on a sixpence........................proof in the pudding with the best PI :(

Got to say that I really like Greenstuff pads - never had that oh-my-God-I'm-not-going-to-stop feeling with them. Guess I'm not trying hard enough

The pads used in the Stag brakes are the same as used on the big saloons (now anyway). This means that the front brake swept area must also be the same.

However, if the Stag calipers have bigger pistons, then the pedal effort might be less for the same braking effect. Also, with the bigger (Stag) discs, the pad might be further out, thus giving a higher disc to pad speed which should improve braking effect.

Stag rears of course are better - as Colin says - the shoes are much wider.

In my experience, the standard setup is fine for road use if working properly. I can't say anything about track work (never done any!) or about caravan towing, (not done any for a long time!)

The comment about lower cost Stag discs is of course valid too. I'm not sure about the dual circuit master though!

Cheers,
Mike.

Stag discs are bigger so potentially give more torque — however the master cylinder and servo is different so actually it doesn't give any more stopping power — but it does stop them from fading as the brakes are under less stress.

There's nothing wrong with standard brakes on the late Mk1 and Mk2 cars — and it sounds like towing is good also.

On track though — I am braking from 100+ mph down to 50mph — you want them to be back to the right temperature and working 15 seconds later when you get to the next corner doing another 100 to 50 stop. After a few laps of that the standard late Mk1 brakes start to go off (with new discs and asbestos pads)

WIth the vented set up I've just put on I figure there's no chance it can possibly overheat. I have just bought some IR temp sensors to rig up something so I can see the disc temp while I'm driving.

I wish you can use vented discs on my rally car. But as regs say I can only use solid discs as stated in the homologation papers.

FYI everybody here.

Don't fit Stag calipers and discs (and the rear) without changing to the Stag master cylinder.

It'll feel like you have incredible brakes but that's only because you've now got 35% more torque on the front wheels — the car will be totally out of balance front-to-back and the rears will do nothing.

(just happened to be looking at some figures this evening)

Stag drums make loads of difference when pushing on, the shoes are loads wider than originals and when set up properly you can feel the difference, especially on a trackday  But beware the drums are very different and the face that the wheel mounts against is inset a bit. Fine with Stag/S alloys (urrgh) but if I want the MOMOs on the pi I have to use 5mm spacers.

Colin
Yeah, got a set of Stag drum/shoes on my S but have regular lock-ups on one of the wheels even after Moordale have had a tinker.

Do you have aditional Stag bits on your set-up? I know the levers are different (longer on the Stag) and will try a set at some point. Of course it is advantageous is others can give an opinion or have had experience on the issue.

My pi (which has the Stag rear brakes), has all the components from the Stag, including the levers for the handbrake.
I also have the fronts, a Stag m/c and servo and dual circuits. The only part of the Stag setup missing is the PWDA valve and warning light.

I have only ever had the rears locking up on a trackday when braking hard and shifting down for a chicane in the middle of a long straight from 80+. Entirely understandable really
Never anything in normal road use.
I refurbed the rears thoroughly before install, checking for wear in everything. The handbrake is always awesome after a trackday, the continued hard use of the brakes really brings the rear self adjusters right up.
