Upgrading front brakes 2500

#1 Post by e.p.j. »

I saw lately a TR6 with vented disc's and thought would it be possible to place them on a 2500?

Has anyone done this upgrade or something else. I find the disc very little in comparison with modern car.

You can, but unless you are going racing, very little benefit for road use for an expensive conversion.
Stag front brakes bolt straight on. Bigger disc, bigger calliper gives much better brakes. Need to have 14" wheel or bigger, wont fit under 13.
There are expensive upgrades, google monarch stag for some kits. But, for road use stag front (and rears) give very good brakes, especially if you use mintex or ebc pads.

I have a Chris Witor Wilwood vented discs/caliper conversion that was fitted on the Mk2 estate when I had it. Yes they really DO work  and although very expensive they are a case of buy the kit and fit them with no fiddling around to adapt them

However for my use on an estate they are not really suitable so I have arranged to swap them for a Stag set up.

Why go to the expense of different discs when a decent set of pads do as good or better job? And I don't mean greenstuff.......rubbish. Set fire to mine on the car!!!! Stag discs and drums are just an expensive time wasting effort, anything else is just even more expensive. I use Mintex 1144 pads on the rally car, no fade and the car stands on her nose.

To be honest unless you're using it on track the standard brakes are very good — if not then there's something wrong with them.

I find stag brakes to be an improvement over standards, certainly helped when towing bring the unit to a stop!

Mintex 1144 you reckon Charles? Where do you get those from?

I use Mintex 1155 for Tarmac and 1166 for forestry. 1144 are fine for normal and fast road. 1144 are around the £65.00 mark.

Erm yes and no.
Stag discs are cheaper than mk2 ones, so an upgrade makes sense.
I would agree that the pads make a lot of difference, NOS asbestos laden pads really work well, but put loads of (harmful) dust on your wheels. they go for £10 to £15 at autojumbles. Had thought about 1144s too and heard that greenstuff were pants, yellow EBC are said to be better.
Stag drums make loads of difference when pushing on, the shoes are loads wider than originals and when set up properly you can feel the difference, especially on a trackday  But beware the drums are very different and the face that the wheel mounts against is inset a bit. Fine with Stag/S alloys (urrgh) but if I want the MOMOs on the pi I have to use 5mm spacers.

Having just done the 10CR in James Shackfords Mk1 PI fitted with stag brakes and the new compound Mintex 1144 - I can honestly say it's all you need for the road!
I think just the pads make the biggest difference but as discs need to be good too maybe the bigger Stag disc and caliper ( bigger piston) makes sense too.
