MK1 interior bits

#1 Post by TedTaylor » Thu Jun 06, 2013 10:49 am

My Mk1 is getting close to the stage when I will be able to finish the bodywork and I am looking for some of the interior bits to tidy it up.

Specifically I need:
1). A Mk1 dash top because the one attached to the cactus dash is damaged above the glove box.
While a complete cactus and black dash would be ideal any will do because I have checked the WS Manual and find that this top is a separate item so can be replaced, and while I have painted the cactus lower bit black I have found by experiment that I can clean the paint off using a suitable solvent and not damage the vinyl.
2). A cactus passenger seat (ouch). Oh why did I dump the old pair when we moved house in 2000!
3). Cactus door cards - or even just a passenger one because I could clean the paint off the others but the drivers one is damaged.
4). Cactus rear seats. Again, I have found I can clean the black paint off but unpainted ones would be very useful!
An indicator switch because the stalk has come away on mine and is hanging loose. May repair with glue but a spare would be useful ...... just in case.
5). Also the triangular bit of dash wood on the left hand side. Took it off to sort out because it was damaged ........ but have lost it  !!

I know cactus vinyl trim is difficult to find but if you have any of these bits it would be helpful.
Not expecting freebies but any help appreciated.

Thanks

Ted, re the indicator stalk, they often work loose and 'come away in you hand' when the small screw at the base of the stalk works loose and in extreme cases falls out. Then the stalk flops around with only the thin wiring keeping it attached to the column. Just a thought....

Ah thanks for this that is just what had happened. I'll check on it when I get the car back next week and report.

Looks like I will be OK for seats so just need to source door cards - and a dash!

Thanks

I passed on a complete cactus interior to someone here about a year ago.
I tried to remove the dash but found on mine (1964) it seemed to be an integral part of the body shell and bulkhead. The vinyl covering just broke up when I tried to remove it, so it was all scrapped with the shell.

All Mk1 dashes are part of the shell structure and that is what makes them more rigid than the MK2 and hence no need for engine strut brace.

Both my Mk1 2000 and Mk1 2000/PI Parts Manuals show the dash itself as Fascia Panel Assembly:
807409 RH Steer to MB60000 (Mk1 2000 Manual only)
BZ1 8906759 RH Steer to MB60000 (Mk1 2000 and Mk1 2000/PI both Manuals) presumably for the facelift.
Is this a welded in steel structure as Lee suggests.

The Manuals then go on to show upper and lower Foam Cover Assemblies as separate items.
The upper held in place with six nuts/plain washers/lock washers which presumably go onto studs moulded into the Foam Cover which are therefore fixed to the Fascia Panel Assembly.
This Foam Cover is only listed as black in both manuals for the upper.

The bottom middle/right hand bit (lower Foam Cover Assembly) is held in place with eight nuts/plain washers/lock washers. This lower is shown as an option of five colours to MB60000, but black from then on (Facelift)

It is therefor possible to remove the dash top (upper Foam Cover Assembly) after removing the wood trim (similar nuts and washers) by undoing the nuts, removing the washers, and carefully lifting it off. Then the bottom bit by again undoing nuts, removing the washers, and carefully lifting it off after removal of the upper (it looks like there is part of the moulding which goes under the upper).

To get at these nuts is probably quite fiddly and would require removal of the parcel tray and all instruments etc. to get in there ......... Obviously great car has to be taken that in undoing the nuts, the studs moulded into the Foam are not allowed to turn and careful lubrication required.

It might be that if someone has good ones on a car they are breaking that they would want me to come and remove them ........ :?

If anyone wants a copy of the relevant pages from the Manual they are welcome to email me at ted.taylor@bigfoot.com

Thanks

Clifford I wish you had not told me ...........

Any idea of who you passed the interior stuff on to please? I have hopefully got seats from Dave W but if any other bits are around and they have them spare I could ask them the question.

Thanks
