Mk1 PI Brake Master Cylinder identification
Mk1 PI Brake Master Cylinder identification
Hi All,
Can anyone help with advice on the correct brake master cylinder for a Mk1 PI?
I have two types which came off two Mk1 PIs, both single circuit Girling, but I'm not sure which one is original spec (or perhaps both are!). One is completely metal, with an integral reservoir and is a Girling .875" part no. 64065575. The other one has a plastic reservoir and part no. 7326 0230 cast into the metal piston body. Hopefully I've successfully attached pictures below!
Thanks for any help.
Jonathan

Re: Mk1 PI Brake Master Cylinder identification
Thanks Lee - can't quite make it out on the tiny photo, but I am more than happy to take your experienced word for it! Could you let me know what finish the metal parts have - black paint, silver paint, or bare casting?
Readers may have noticed that the correct master cylinder is in need of some "tlc", while the incorrect one is all shiny and reconditioned. Note to self - check with people who know before parting with cash...
Anyone else with a Mk1 PI out there, just to make the poll even more statistically-sound?!

Re: Mk1 PI Brake Master Cylinder identification
Both my car and that of my boss have cast Aluminium master cylinders as shown in the second picture.
Could there be a difference between home market RHD and export LHD specifications ?
Regards,
Martin.

Re: Mk1 PI Brake Master Cylinder identification
I couldn't say yes or no Martin, but do the LHD cars have a remote servo in the same position as the RHD cars?
Someone with a mk1 parts book will be able to answer your question no doubt.

Re: Mk1 PI Brake Master Cylinder identification
I´m not sure where the RHD remote servo unit is located, but the LHD one is shown in the picture below behind the red HT leads on the far side of the engine bay. It´s mounted on a bracket fitted to the rear edge of the battery tray.
I´ve also had a look through an original Mk1 parts book at work today - just one part number (152460) is given for the master cylinder so it would seem the same part is used for both LHD & RHD vehicles.
Regards,
Martin.

Re: Mk1 PI Brake Master Cylinder identification
I agree with Andy, mine has the integral aluminium resevoir and I think that is OE.

Re: Mk1 PI Brake Master Cylinder identification
Thanks all for your help. I'll go with the majority - Chris Witor also thought the all-metal one was correct. The schematic diagrams in the workshop manual (which has separate section for the Mk1 PI system) look like that type - not in itself categoric proof, but useful to back up actual evidence.
Progress is steady on the car. It's still being welded (no surprise there then...) but the engine is now in bits and revealed no major horror stories. Still on the hunt for a set of good late Mk1 black leather seats, which I could swap for a set of fantastic tan leather seats plus tan door cards, parcel shelf...
