The exhaust system on my 2.5s estate(auto), needs replacing. Do I go for Mild Steel, or fit a Stainless system? I\'ve been told that stainless exhausts sound \"tinny and noisy!\"
Prices for stainless systems I\'ve been quoted:
RIMMERS-£233, P.D GOUGH-£464, AND ROADRUNNER-£180. Is this a case of \"you pays your cash and take your chances?
Can anyone recommend ,(from experience), a reasonably priced and good quality stainless exhaust.?        Thanking you. Bazzamech....New Member.        &nbsp ;         &nbsp ;         &nbsp ;         &nbsp ;

Hello Bazz,
if you intend keeping the car Stainless is the way, I have had a Chris Witor system on my car for longer than I remember, I would certainly recommend this system.

Bazz,
Couldn\'t agree more, the chris witor stainless system is the one to go for.
Full sports is noisy but sounds glorious, has only one big bore silencer at the back.
Semi sport is burbley, but glorious. One silencer in the middle and one big bore at the back.I have this system on my estate. DO NOT PUT A FULL SPORT SYSTEM ON AN ESTATE AS IT IS JUST TOO LOUD!
Or you could go conventional from witor which has 2 silencers in the middle and a big bore at the back. Too quiet for me but hey, whatever!

Hey Bazz

I too have a Chris Witor stainless system on my car and I think it is the best money I have ever spent on anything, ever! I really don\'t think you will be disappointed.

Best wishes

Certainly wouldn\'t describe my Chris Witor stainless steel sports exhaust tinny and noisy. Well alright, the latter does apply, but it\'s a brilliant noise that turns heads and sets off car alarms. However, that aside, for durability I know which will last longest out of my car and the exhaust and there is no competition with the exhaust!!!!! Guarantee it will be going on the next car I buy.
Regards,
Matt

I bought a standard Chris Witor system a few years ago.
It was a real pain to fit, and took a full weekend. The angle of offset of the two centre silencers was not quite right, and the lengths were all slightly wrong so that none of the mounting points lined up. I ended up having to cut the pipes and make new brackets, so all the nice stainless ones I had bought were useless. It was extremely difficult making the pipe stay in the middle of the sub-frame hole at the rear, and the handbrake cable horseshoe fouled the rear silencer, so I had to make a new handbrake cable bracket in a different position.
After numerous hours spent repositioning it over the last two years it is now working fine. Not noticeably noisier, but I found I needed to re-tune the carburettors because the pipe is 1/8\" larger than the old one.

That is really unusual. I have had about 3 systems from Chris over the years and every one has fitted perfectly first time.
I would suggest that you got unlucky and had a \"dodgy\" one. Should have contacted Chris and got it changed, he is a very fair man!

I did actually. He said they did vary a bit, and I had to expect to do a bit of cutting and pasting. Maybe the fit is more critical with a Mark 1?

Oh! I am stunned! I have never heard of this before!!! Having said that, perhaps the system is designed to fit a MKII and to get it to fit a MKI or estate then perhaps some \"fettling\" is required?
When I ordered my last one (about 5 years ago) Chris asked me whether it was MKII Saloon or MKI/Estate so I assume there are 2 different systems. Maybe that has changed?
Sorry to hear you had to play with it, but was it worth it in the end?

To the best of my knowledge the only part that is different on the sports system between a Mk1 and a Mk2 is the section between the rear box and the main straight thro pipe.
Originally I had the Mk2 section fitted to my Mk1, with no problems other than that the tail pipe protruded too far out of the back of the car.
Since I have had the proper Mk1 section fitted, the whole exhaust now seems to under too much stress !
