Rocker shaft oil boost

#1 Post by valencia »

I'm having difficulty fitting a rocker shaft oil feed booster kit. I understand that one end fits to the back of the cylinder head but I am unsure where to fit the other end. Incidentally, I already have a t-piece fitted to the engine block for the pressure sender and an oil pressure gauge.
Is there another conveinient take off point that I can use?
Is it also true that this device will lower my overall oil pressure?
My car is an early (1969) mk2, 2000.
Thanks.

Work of the devil! I recommend that these are not fitted. The 6 cylinder engine was produced from the 1950s through to the late 1970s and Triumph never changed the oilway to the rockers, so why change it now. The pick up for this external feed is the main oil gallery which will result in lower pressure elsewhere in the engine. What is cheaper to replace, rockers or main and big end bearings and crankshaft? The oil supply to the top of the engine is more than adequate for normal spirited use IMHP.

There may be an argument for the use of an external rocker shaft feed where roller rockers are fitted (not least to comply with suppliers' warranty requirements on some roller rocker kits) but you really need to be aware of the downsides too. Some people seem to have fitted external rocker feeds without any attendant problems but, as Charles has said, others have found that they can upset the distribution of oil within the engine, leading to too much 'up top' but reduced pressure at the crank bearings.

If you're building an all-out racing engine with roller rockers, high-output oil pump, etc, then the use of an external feed may be appropriate. For normal road use, however, and provided that all else is in good order, I agree with Charles that the standard lubrication arrangement to the rockers should be sufficient.

In answer to the other part of your question, the intended bottom-end fitting is customarily the oil pressure switch drilling in the side of the block so, if you intend to fit the kit anyhow, you'll need to arrange for a tee-piece with two take-offs unless you're prepared to lose either your o/p gauge or the warning light...

Thanks for your help everyone, I wont bother with it this device, and I wouldn't like to lose my existing gauge and warning light setup anyway. I only paid £8.00 for it off another guy at a car rally over the weekend so it's not a great loss.
Thanks again.

Hello Valencia,

there are several available drillings along the oil gallery, most blanked off by plugs.
I don't believe that a sound engine will have it's oil pressure affected if this boost is used, but you may experience an excess of oil in the rocker area which can make the engine rather smoky at idle.

It can also make the rocker cover leak a lot more at the gasket, they are fairly difficult to seal properly at the best of times.
