Replacing Drag-Stut Cups on body

Whats the preferred method of welding these onto the shell?

I've previously MIG welded around the outside, but it has been a bit messy due to access. Alternatively do I plug weld through the face and then try to grind the welds back with a die-grinder, as the bushes rest against this face.

I'd use the spot welder, but only have access to one side in situ!
