MK1 leather seats

#1 Post by sahtuning2000 » Sat Sep 21, 2019 8:19 am

My leather seats in the MK1 are abit tied and the drivers seat is split, have some nice period seat covers over them at the moment which look the part, but was thinking of trying to get the seats restored if it doesn,t cost a fortune....
Whats the best route to take, finding an unsplit drivers seat would be nice!

Hi Dave,
Finding the correct diamond pattern leather to redo the seats is like looking for the proverbial rocking horse ****.
The only way it could be done would be to find good rear seats, and an equally good trimmer to make good fronts out of the rear leather material. The leather needs to be still subtle as it dries out and splits on the stitching and it is then difficult to repair or join it.
There will be some joins, perhaps where there aren't at the moment but it would be better than using a totally different pattern of leather. Depends on how original looking you want it.
I take it you want the tan leather?

I'm lucky enough to have the genuine diamond pattern in red hide. The passenger seat was in strips, but it was just the stiching rotted. I dismantled the seat and re-stiched it.
The rear seat stitching had gone too along the top part of the back section, but again, only the stitching.
