Front wing/valance drain hole?

#1 Post by Binny » Fri Apr 30, 2021 11:55 am

I'm just completing the welded repairs to the forward lower part of the O/S front wing and lower part of the front valance on my Mk2 PI.

Before I seal and paint everything please can somebody confirm whether there should be some sort of drainage hole/slot at the point where the lowest part of the front wing joins to the front valance and inner wheel arch. To me it looks like moisture can easily be trapped behind the internal flanged joint between the wing and valance.

I should also mention that I fabricated my own repair patches and that the original body work was too rotten or missing to provide any sort of reference.

On my 1973 PI, and 1976 2500S there are drain holes where the front lower corner of the wing meets the front valance, and several along the whole of the lower edge of the front valance. They were often blocked with underseal that was applied by the dealerships when new. They are about 1" wide. On my S, I enlarged them slightly at the wing corner for better drainage and to reduce the likelihood of silt blocking them over time.
The picture is of one of the original drain holes enlarged slightly on my S.
Don't forget about the small drain holes at the rear of the wheel arch, where the outer wing meets the rear of the bowl immediately by the start of the sill. This was to allow for drainage from roof gutter which drains into the inside of the inner wing.

Thanks for the reply and photo Johnnydog - that’s just as I thought it might be.
I’ve also completely rebuilt the lower rear of the front wing/arch and nose of the sill and have made sure that water can drain from that area.
Thanks once again👍🏻

I added enlarged drain holes where mine had previously rusted and has been repaired at what seems to be the lowest point
