New fuel cap

#1 Post by Ltriumph » Mon Jan 13, 2025 7:21 am

I need to replace the fuel cap on my Triumph 2000TC, 1978. Not sure of the size to get, is there a similar one for other cars that will fit as can’t find one in NZ that says can fit Triumph.

Oil filler cap with the rubber seal works. CW sold them and I have used one. It appears now he has re-manufactured ones possibly the same without the paint of 'Oil' on it. It wasn't difficult to scrape off the paint either. You should be able to find a supplier your side of the world. For reference https://www.chriswitor.com/proddetail.php?prod=618389RM

That doesn't look anything like mine. Mine doesn't turn - you engage it in the right orientation and then turn the key in the centre and a projecting lug locks it.

The original fuel filler cap was a chromed cap with AC Petrol embossed in it, and was a twist fit with lugs that engaged with the filler neck externally.
Lockable aftermarket caps had a collar and cork gasket that was a twist fit on the neck, held in position by a flimsy self tapper; the thread of which bit into the side of the neck flange.
The turning of the key operated the lugs that slotted into the inside of the collar. So the locking caps secured internally on the neck (collar) whilst the originals secured externally on the neck.
I tried many makes of locking petrol caps when it was the practise to fit one, but none sealed very well dispite the cork gasket, and often poured fuel out on cornering with anything above three quarters of a tank. The original chromed twist caps are a lot better although they can dribble little, but nowhere near as bad as the various locking caps I've tried in the past.
All my cars now have the original AC chromed petrol caps fitted.

I replaced the old one with a locking one, same problem as johnnydog, fuel spilled out. I have the one shown in the photos but the seal has deteriorated hence the need for a new cap.
