Smoke from oil cap

Hello all. The other day I noticed some smoke coming out of my oil filler cap. Its a Triumph 2000 mk 1 1963 I bought a couple of weeks ago. I am no mechanic unfortunately and research brings up loads of possibilities. Does anyone have any ideas? The car from a novices point of view runs really well and very smoothly, no misfires or the like.

Feel like a prat now but I think it is just because I have a vented oil cap so most likely normal. Alot to learn about my new car.

Hi Joe,
Assuming your car still has its original engine fitted, the early Mk1's had a different crankcase breather system, commonly called the 'breather snout', fitted round the fuel pump and oil fiter and venting out to the road. It also had the push on dome type oil filler cap. I don't think your concerns are anything to worry about (as long as it isn't 'excessive').

I've a spare early engine and just been out to refresh my memory.
Yes, there is no ventilation system as such - the inevitable fumes in the crankcase and rocker cover simply have to find their own way out via the snout, low down on the dipstick side. Presumably there is a slight suction effect at the snout when in motion, as there is no other.

I think the later rocker cover fits, which would have a sealed cap and an outlet for a suction pipe to an appropriate carburettor or manifold connection.
