Hi chaps,
New petrol pump fitted but not pumping fuel, cam inside the engine turning fine and I’m able to pump the fuel manually via that little pump lever on the bottom of the pump.
There is a spacer between fuel pump and block and bearing in mind this was once a PI but now on carbs, could that spacer be the wrong one/size and if so what side (depth) spacer should I have on it? Or have I bought the wrong pump?
Pump Item number on eBay was - 203218648405
As always thanks in advance
Sal
Petrol pump question...
Re: Petrol pump question...
Hello Sal,
it's possible that you don't need the spacer but some measurement might be wise, because if the throw on the cam is going to over drive the pump lever with no spacer it could damage it? If you turn the engine by hand so that the lobe on the cam is at full 'push, then see if you can mount the pump by hand such that the flange meets with the block it should be OK.
My only other thought is does a PI cam have a lobe for the mechanical pump? A quick inspection is called for.

Re: Petrol pump question...
Good point....
Does anyone know if the PI has the correct cam on the camshaft to operate the mechanical fuel pump?

Re: Petrol pump question...
I had a PI on carbs a good few years ago. It had its original PI engine with a standard fuel pump which was mounted with no spacer between the pump mounting face and block.
The only other point to check is whether the angle of the operating arm of the new pump is the correct angle to contact the camshaft lobe. I have seen fuel pumps that appear identical, but when compared to the original, the angle of the operating lever was nearer to a 90 degrees angle to the mounting face whereas (from memory) the lever for our cars is nearer 45 degrees to the mounting face.

Here's a couple of pictures from CW's website showing the differences in the fuel pumps -

Re: Petrol pump question...
Thanks Johnnydog, I just nipped out to the garage (cider in hand of course) and you’re right,, no need for a spacer it fits flush to the block with a gasket of course.
I’ll make sure I check everything twice on this motor from now on... Thanks lads and happy new year.
Right then now back to the cider.....
Sal

Re: Petrol pump question...
The PI CAM was also used on the GT6 and Vitesse, both of which had carbs so the fuel pump lobe must be there.
I'm pretty sure that all the standard 6 cylinder CAMs had the pump lobe. I once drove a Mk1 with an early TR6 engine, but on carbs. That worked OK fuel pump wise. It was a bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing though!
Cheers,
Mike.
