Hi gents,
Just curious if the engine can be pulled from the car ‘77 2500S (with manual box and PAS) and leave the gearbox in place? Already have the engine bay pretty much gutted and head off of engine so seems that should be able to get the block out fairly easily or is there something I’m overlooking?
Engine pull with gearbox still in place
Re: Engine pull with gearbox still in place
Yes it can certainly be done, and I have done so but about 40 years ago - so can't remember the detail for any tips.
Sorry.
Sorry.
Re: Engine pull with gearbox still in place
Personally I have never done this, but it can work. There isn't a lot of space at the front and the unit needs to be lifted a long way up to clear everything. I had always dropped the whole gearbox and engine to the floor and then lifted the body after removing the suspension cross member (nut and bolt on each track control arm, four bolts on each end of the member). Since yours is a PAS car, separate the track rod ends and rack pinch bolt and the entire unit will lower to the floor. Arguably easier than undoing all the gearbox bell housing bolts!
Let us know which way you proceed and how you get on. Pictures would be good too.

Thanks chaps. Plan to attempt this undertaking next week if all goes well so will make sure to update the thread and add some pics!
Re: Engine pull with gearbox still in place
Ok, so engine and box are out. Since the head was off already, that afforded us some additional wiggle room but still was a bit of a faff, short of following the WSM and dropping the front cradle down in its entirety. So, what we did was, with the car on a two post lift, we got everything mostly undone to separate the gearbox from the engine then lowered the car to about four feet off the ground and went underneath with a hydraulic engine table (I use this for dropping Ferrari engines and transaxles and it works a treat). Anyhow, got the gearbox separated from the engine whilst it was supported by the hydraulic table and slid it out from underneath the car. All the while, we had the cherry picker supporting the engine from tilting too far backwards, then I unbolted the clutch assembly to gain some additional clearance from the bulkhead and also undid the bonnet latch from the bulkhead then simply raised the block up and out of the engine bay. Was definitely fiddly doing it this way but I needed the car to remain mobile as I have other cars needing to get on my lift. Propshaft, entire exhaust and radiator removed previously so all in all, certainly doable. Some pics attached;
