Engine will not start.......

#1 Post by bigestate » Tue Nov 13, 2018 11:54 am

Until I release the ignition key from the cranking position.
I fitted a new Ballast resister the week before the RBRR which didn't help. There is 12 volts at the coil and this drops to 8 volts while cranking.
Been told it could be the ignition switch contacts at the end of the barrel?
It did this about a year ago and by fitting a new ballast resistor it cured the problem, I'm a little stuck now :(
Just wondering if it is a faulty ballast?
Any thoughts.

Cheers Peter

Hello Peter,

normally when cranking there is a feed from the starter motor directly to the coil, which bypasses the ballast.
You say you have 12 volts and 8 volts when cranking which seems to eliminate the ignition switch.

This starter feed to the coil should connect on the coil side of the resistor and when cranking you should have battery voltage at the coil +ve terminal.

Many thanks Alec. I'll check that the wirers are where there supposed to be. Maybe the wire from the ballast to the starting motor isn't up to the job anymore? 🤔
Though the ignition switch which was a possibility is no longer a possibility. 😁

I''d had thought that you should have 12 volts when cranking and 8 volts when running. Have you transposed some wires

Thank you for your reply Tony, not that I know of.
I was told that it could be the ignition switch and also had another suggestion on the switch.
I hot wired it as inform to try and the car started immediately, so looking like it is the switch playing up if I done this correctly

PS Your not Tony Clarke by any chance?
