Dan, Rubbish.

PI's (if you know what you are doing!) return better mpg, better response and more suited to everyday driving than a carb verison.

I ran a PI as an everyday car for about 12 years, and the PI I have now is a much better running car than my S on carbs.

I know many people who run a PI as an everyday car......... Alex Luker ran a MKI PI everyday until fairly recently when it got written off!

Each to their own Dan, but you're wrong about PI's..........

I know we're off topic, but I agree with Alan. There is no reason why a PI cannot be used as an everyday car. They could when they were new and they have not changed, only our perception of them. I believe the main issue is the fact that the injection system is VERY dependant on engine condition, much more so that for a carb version. So, the performance/fuel economy of an older engine, getting a bit worn, will be worse with a PI system than with carbs. To get a PI to perform properly needs a lot of understanding of how the system works. Even when the cars were new, some main agents had problems, so apart from a few very knowledgable specialists, we're now on our own, (with the Register of course).

We ran a PI for many years as the every day (and only) car. If I could find another good one, or the date of 'tax exempt' moves one by just one more year (my PI then becomes exempt) I'd use one again.

Puts soap box away.

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Dan,

It depends on if you mean a 2000 or 2.5. The Mk 1 2000 had a different head to the 2.5 or any Mk2. The Mk2 (Mk1 PI) head is wider and is probably better gas flowed than the Mk1 2000. The Mk1 2000 studs are also thinner and the head torque-down spec is less than the Mk2. Mk1 2000's seem to be more prone to blowing head gaskets.

The Mk1 PI engine is really a TR5 engine with a slightly detuned CAM. The basic engine design is much the same as all subsequent Mk2 2000/2500/2.5. Yes, there were CAM/manifold/CR changes, but basically the same.

I hope that helps!

Cheers,
Mike.

As an aside, I've removed auto-pruning from this forum. It's inevitable that many posts on here will generate discussion, and it seems a shame to lose it.
If I feel the need to prune, I'll do it manually.
