Mk 2 battery stays
Hi all - i am after a pair of original battery stays - not the top angled section - just the two threaded parts, that clamps the top angled section from the battery to the base. Mine came with a bit of a miss-mash - not sure which was original, but both were a bit bent/ tatty etc. Since going back on the road a couple of years ago , my Indy guy that helped get it back up and running ditched them and retro fitted a modern threaded bar type system ( he is H+S governed unfortunately) but ive always hated it - just looks gash. If anyone has an influx of a pair of these to suit a 1975 2500S i would be quite happy to purchase a pair no problem. Please let me know, as i want it to look as original as possible.
Many thanks.
Many thanks.

Re: Mk 2 battery stays
I recently checked my stock of used battery clamps and securing rods for another member - I was surprised how many different lengths and styles there are....
The S originally had a lot smaller battery and narrower battery tray than the earlier Mk2's due to the slant on the engine. This will obviously affect the length of the securing rods.
Assuming you actually have the correct clamp (the Mk1, early Mk2 and aftermarket versions were different to the correct clamp for the facelift models) and the ends of the rods that hook into the battery tray were different - some had a 'flattened' profile whereas some were just bent round to form a 'hook'. It also depends where the hooks locate - some place them in the hole on the side of the battery tray 'supports', whilst some are hooked into the small gap where the tray supports meets the inner wheelarch bowl, therefore requiring different lengths.
Unfortunately I am not near my S at the moment to check the lengths or take a picture of the rods that are fitted as they are the originals from new.
Didn't think a battery clamp and rods could be so technical!!!!

Re: Mk 2 battery stays
Well i would have to agree there - who would of thought even that ' basic and simple' item would have so many changes/ parts!! I thought these cars were meant to be un-complicated
. I am aware of the various hole positions within the battery box support, and i had previously wondered why so many options!!!. Strange. I think what i will do then is ( when it warms up a tad) is take a photo of my top bracket, and also the 'original' side clamps ( assuming i can find them,i think they ended up in the loft) put them up for you to see what i actually have. I am fairly sure the two that came with the car were different, in style and length.

Re: Mk 2 battery stays
Just out of interest, does your battery clamp look like this? This correct for later cars with HS6 SU's. This photo is from CW's website - he also does a stainless version, but does not appear to list the stays / rods for this later clamp - only ones for the earlier type.

Re: Mk 2 battery stays
Hi John, yes i believe it is similar to that - although that item looks like the pressed sides look the same - i am sure mine has two different pressings , if you see what i mean, and i also think mine has more than one hole at each end? Is it not amazing that something that you look at fleetingly but often, can allude the mind when you actually try to picture it in your head when out of sight
I perhaps need to uncover the car, pop the bonnet and have a look sometime this week to clarify!!!
On reflection - taking a second look at your picture, when blowing up the left side, i can see the pressings on each side are different - so the odds are that is what i have. I will check this week !!

Re: Mk 2 battery stays
If you are in any doubt whether your clamp is actually an original one Nige, I have a couple of spares. Just let me know and I can also measure the rods too, as they aren't threaded their whole length like after market replacements. I'm away at the moment but can check when I get back if you haven't got any further with it?

Re: Mk 2 battery stays
I believe that the top clamp is more than likely correct, the side fixings not so sure. No rush - it will give me time to find the ' original ones', photo them, and the top section, and post up. I just do not like the way it is set up currently - looks ugly. Many thanks for your kind offer by the way. As an aside - was there anything, when new, between the battery itself, and the actual battery box- ie sandwiched between? Again, mine had a slip of old cardboard - during this time off i have actually finally discarded that, and cut in a neat section of carpet matting - looks so much better- and i feel locates the actual battery better too.

Re: Mk 2 battery stays
On my Triumphs, I have cut a thin piece of smooth black hard rubber (which is approx. 1/16" thick) to the exact shape of the tray for the battery to sit on. It doesn't look out of place at all. It also protects the actual paintwork of the tray itself. I got a roll of it over 30 years ago from a builder who was retiring - I think it was actually intended as a double width dpm as the roll is approx. 12" wide, but the uses I have made of it have been endless!

Re: Mk 2 battery stays
Ok so here are the pictures of what i have - the top bracket looks correct, although as i thought there are 2 sets of holes? And the stays - obviously the left hand one is a makeshift the p.o. i assume made , is the right hand one a correct one, although it is pretty bent - i cant see why it would of got to that condition.
