Hi from Italy

#1 Post by mbracing » Mon Aug 14, 2023 2:45 pm

I'm a new Forum member, and I do plan to join the Register soon. I'm based in Northern Italy not far from the Como lake, I've been always an enthusiast about cars and bikes and I have a small collection of them. In the past I've also been a professional race car driver and I always worked in the automotive industry.
In the last 40 years (now I'm 62) I always had a Triumph in my garage, first one was a Spitfire than all the TRs etc. currently I'm owning a TR5 and just recently I found a nice 2500 PI from 1975, one of the last so-called "facelift" cars built, with auto gearbox and PAS. The 2500 PI is a very rare sight here in Italy, and I was pretty much surprised when I found this one, that by the way is in very good conditions. I have some questions about the specs and the chassis number, is it OK to post them here or should I go to a different forum section?
Kindest regards, and looking forward to use my PI soon!

Welcome to the Forum and hopefully the Register! Congratulations on your purchase of your late model 2500PI! The Triumph 2000 Register is a great club to be part of with its sole interests in the 2000 and 2500 /2.5 models, as opposed to other clubs that endorse all Triumph models. The bi monthly glossy colour magazine is absolutely superb with its quality content and one of the best car club publications I have seen (thanks to our Editor Andrew Newman!). I have been in the Register for over 37 years!
The Forum is a very worthy place to visit with questions about your car, whether that be general mechanical queries, or basically anything 2000 / 2500 / 2.5 related, as the wealth of experience and knowledge on here is second to none! Many members are long term Triumph owners and their extensive knowledge has been gained from their experiences over the years!
Ask any question about our range of cars, and I'm sure there will be the relevant information forth coming!

Hallo Johnnydog
And thanks for the warm welcome. I’ll be join the Register soon, I’m sure it will be very interesting.
I just sent you a private message with a specific question regarding an old post you did time ago.
Then if this is the right place I would like to ask what the letters near my chassis and engine no.s do mean:
Chassis no: MN1867LDLAP
Engine no: MG87559EA
and also if anybody knows (also approx) how many “facelift” PIs were built with the automatic gearbox like mine.
With many thanks in advance

I have replied to your pm regarding the PI 'rostyle' wheel trims!
Re your chassis no (VIN no) -
MN denotes a facelift PI
In the LDLAP -
The first L denotes LHD
DL is the standard lettering for the range
A denotes auto transmission (earlier cars had BW instead of A)
P denotes Power Assisted Steering

Re your engine no -
MG denotes a PI engine
E denotes the type of engine unit
A denotes the engine originally was mated from the factory to an auto transmission gearbox (as above earlier cars stated BW).

I've attached some photos from the original workshop manual with the relevant codes, and an extract from an old SIXappeal relative to numbers produced of the facelift PI.

Hope this helps!
