Tow bar or not Tow bar…..

#1 Post by simon.williams » Sat Feb 22, 2025 5:37 pm

Extremely chunky bit of metalwork which I’m tempted to keep on the car, even if I doubt it will ever get much use.

I have a fair sized dint in the rear, which is not obvious when the bumper is on. Had anyone tried pulling dents out of this section or should I go to a pro?

That will pull out pretty easily. Will have been a small nudge on the bumper at some stage in its life,

I once pushed in the same point on my previous 2000, including putting a crumple in the wing.
I used a bottle jack in the boot between the bulkhead and the bumper mounting, suitably cushioned with blocks of timber, and to my surprise the whole rear section just pushed straight back into place. The wing itself also unfolded itself, without a mark.

I have a similar dent on my Royal Blue Mk1, just to the rear valance on the nearside. It was on the car when I bought it over 40 years ago, and was clearly caused by a minor impact combined with the fact there is a towbar fitted. I've often thought about pulling /pushing it out, but this topic has now spurred me to actually do it! The towbar itself does need blasting and powder coating, and the bumper, although not rotten, is speckled, so this could well be the ideal time to tackle everything...! :D

Thanks, I tried pushing it out with a braced trolley jack in the boot. Some of it came out, but not all. Going to repaint and leave it at that for time being. And I’m leaving the towbar off. Too chunky and I’m not going caravaning any time soon!
