Diff oil

#1 Post by Sal » Sun Nov 27, 2022 2:09 pm

My diff is leaking slightly but no time to fix right now however need to ensure it has enough oil in it.
Can anyone confirm that you fill from the fill bung and when it starts leaking back out that confirms it’s at the right level?

Also… what oil should be used?

Thanks in advance
Sal

Hi Damian,
That's the correct method to ensure the oil level is correct - on a level surface, top up through the side level plug with Hypoid / Hypoy EP90 (same as the manual gearbox) and allow any excess to run out until the flow stops.
The oil filler / level plug is the same head as the one on the gearbox, which being slightly tapered is often a little 'chewed' through being overtighten and / or using incorrect tools to remove it.
Incidentally some oil manufacturers only now specify EP80/90, but EP90 is still readily available.

I have used Smith and Allan for transmission oils in my Triumphs for a good number of years. A good company to deal with and prompt delivery too.
