Hello everyone. I've got a 1973 2000, not sure what overdrive unit it has in it I'm afraid. Just wanted to know is it normal for it to take a while for the overdrive to lick in when the car is cold?
Works perfectly when the car is warmed up but not at all straight after start up? Is this normal?
Probably takes a mile or two to get it going. No major drama just curious.

Even just a check of the gearbox oil level, without a full oil change, topping if necessary, could well improve the overdrive engaging. A low oil level is one cause of sluggish engagement.
An A type overdrive tended to have a harsher and more sudden engagement, whereas the J type were more cushioned and arguably smoother.

It's worth doing a proper oil change, and cleaning the filter.

If it is a J-Type overdrive with the oblong, finned bottom plate (6 screws hold it in place) just remove it (after you have drained the transmission of oil , but beware of getting a faceful of oil when you you are doing that!) Take out the filter and clean it. Ensure the gasket is intact or make a new one, and reassemble. Not sure if the earlier A type overdrive with the circular bottom panel is the same.

Not sure. I haven't had the car long so haven't changed the oil yet. It's going in on Thursday so I'm going to ask for an oil change GL4 I think I have to use and fot the filter to be cleaned out. Fingers crossed it makes a difference.

The original oil spec was EP90 (as also used in the diff) but these days you tend to get EP80/90 which seems OK.
