CV joints
Re: CV joints
Never had any experience of them myself, but the few Register members I know who have bitten the bullet, and been able to afford their high initial outlay, have had nothing but praise for them.

Re: CV joints
I was thinking of doing the prop-shaft first as the drive-shaft's are extremely costly (small batch numbers I guess even with automation). This is the sort of thing a group buy can help with. Incidently, are the Stag drive-shaft's the same or is it TR6?

Re: CV joints
Hello Torque2me,
personally I would not consider a CV joint propellor shaft, I just can't see any advantage bearing in mind how cheap and esy it is to replace Hardy Spicer joints? I find they last a long time also.

Re: CV joints
Are Hardy Spicer joints still made? HS was owned by GKN during the life of the Innsbruck but genuine nos hare difficult to find now (only my experience of the last three years). The present GKN items are not a lick on the older stuff and I doubt if they are UK made (haven't checked that aspect). They are certainly not lasting 30-40k miles of the original stuff (not on my old banger anyway (misalignment may play a part).

Re: CV joints
Hello Kev,
Chris Witor sells them, I don't know where they are made.
I remember discussions about prop shaft alignment but forget the details, possibly it was in the Register Technical Notes?

Re: CV joints
Stag ones are the same but most Stags had peened-in UJ cups rather than circlip types. The whole drive shaft is interchangeable though between Stag and Mk2 saloons/estates.
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: CV joints
Hi Kev,
I've been running a set of CV driveshafts for 16 yrs now and can't complain - it's really fit and forget! I've done at least 40k miles until now without a problem ... As mentioned before you're looking for Stag items for a Mk2, TR6 ones are too short. I believe CDD offer Mk1 items as well.
Best regards
Thorsten

Re: CV joints
There was a long technical discussion a while back, somewhere. The point seemed to be that the inherent rhythmic oscillation from a HS joint could largely be adjusted out by altering the relative angles of the input and output shafts.
Presumably as a CV joint does what it says, it always provides a constant velocity, so alignment wouldn't matter?
Re: CV joints
Hello Cliff,
I believe the problem was to do with the two flange faces not being parallel to each other and this is a problem if too much. I can't say I remember any problems in all the miles I've done in various 2000s I've owned
