Headlights

#1 Post by Joe Wright » Thu Aug 25, 2022 7:59 am

Good morning all.
I need to replace the headlights on my Mk1. They are 5 and 3/4 sealed beam units. Having real trouble finding them. Has anyone got anyone they use or is their a light from another manufacturer that can be used.
I would convert to h4 bulbs etc but I'm not going to be able to do it myself so will stick with sealed beams.
Thanks in advance
Joe

I am thinking though it is a bit of a coincidence both lights aren't working.
Maybe its the switches. The headlight bulbs do look black though hence my thoughts on replacement. I have tried electrical contact spray etc on the switches but to no avail. Sidelights work though.
Just a bit odd both headlights are not working.

I would suspect the rocker switch if both headlights failed at the same time, especially as it is a separate switch to the side lights. check if you have 12v at the headlight feed wire when switched on.

Plus, a blackened sealed beam unit, especially at the top of the lens, or blue cloudy hazing is a sure indication that you units are on their last legs, so to speak.

Yes, I bought some of these (or similar). The eBay links are pretty long, so I hope they work.

Others are available but H Bowers do then with pilot lights. I connected mine to work as running lights - took a feed from the joints in the offside wing which is live when the ignition goes on. I also changed them to LEDs. If you don't like running lights you can join them to the sidelights. If you don't like that idea at all, get them without pilot lights!

Vintage 65 do all 4 if you prefer conventional glass.

Fitting is quite easy. I. didn't go for all 4 headlights to be identical as you need different fittings for the inner bulbs and I didn't want to overload the existing wiring without relays. Bettercarlighting do a conversion for all 4 for you, if you want - I think you just need to get a Stag set.
