Towing

#1 Post by Joe » Wed Nov 25, 2020 4:32 am

Hi, Was wondering what the towing capacity of a 2500 TC is. Can't seem to find it on any spec sheet. We have a small 13" caravan with a tare of 1142 and GVM of1356kg. Was not sure if it may be too much for the Triumph?
Thanks

I have towed caravans with Triumphs, including 2500S models (which is the same mechanical spec as your 2500TC) since the early 80's, varying from 11' to 16' in length. I currently have a 13' Fleetwood, which has been my favourite make for the last 10 years or so.
As long as you drive them sympathetically considering their age, due go their relatively low gearing, they tow very well and can maintain a steady 55 - 60 mph quite easily on the motorway.
They develop their maximum torque at low revs (my S is at 2,750 rpm) which is ideal for towing purposes. They were regularly voted 'tow car of the year' in the 1970's by several caravan magazines and clubs.
With the original saloon rear springs, the back end is quite soft, so I have fitted estate or 'heavy duty' rear springs which keeps the ride height standard, but doesn't drop too much with the weight of the caravan on the back. Some aftermarket springs can jack the back end up ridiculously high, including some makes of coil assisted shockers, so I would stick to an estate or heavy duty rear springs.
All models tow well, but the PI obviously has more grunt, but can suffer with heavy fuel consumption; however if set up properly, they can be more fuel efficient than a carb version.
My Mk1 is also excellent at towing - slightly less rear overhang, and lower overall gearing is a good combination.

Just be sure your brakes are adequate. They tend to get away on you if too fast down hill. :o
