Mk1 suspension wanted

#1 Post by Donald » Thu Dec 03, 2020 8:00 am

Hi, I have located a good shell but unfortunately it is just that.
In order to move it I need to get it rolling and preferably steering.
Can anyone help with rear axle, front crossmember, struts, rack etc.? Please.
Doesn’t have to be good stuff, just functional enough to get the car home to the garage.
Not asking for free stuff and willing to travel to collect if required.
Thanks again

Hi Donald,
Welcome!
In my opinion, for what it's worth, it seems a lot of work purely to get the the shell mobile, especially if you are intending replacing the components / overhauling them, with new or good used.
Have you considered a frame with wheels that the shell could sit on whilst being trailered / moved? Or at least to get the shell on a flat bed trailer to sit on wooden beams for transportation?
Ross (Tinsmith _Skippy) has done extensive restoration work on several vehicles and there are pictures of such a frame in one of his topic (Barn Find PI and Mk1 PI Restoration).
I think a similar frame would make your job of transporting the car easier depending on access and then it could be built up with parts that are in the condition you are happy with. Save doing it all twice!

Here's another two pictures of Ross's PI on its frame, but on the car trailer for transportation...

Once it’s in the garage something like that would be ideal. However, it’s not first in the queue (1962 Singer Vogue currently has priority) so it needs to be mobile across my rough driveway until such times as it goes into the garage.

If you don't manage to locate the parts locally to yourself to get the shell 'mobile', I will have the parts you mentioned in a 'used' condition.
However, if it is literally a bare shell, ideally to get it rolling, you will need as a minimum -
front cross member, complete front struts, hubs, steering rack and associated parts, tie bars, rear subframe / box sections, diff, swinging arms, drive shafts, rear springs, brake drums and wheels. Plus all the necessary fittings to attach them.
I'm not exactly local to you, but just PM me with the specific parts you need if required.

You probably won't need the rear drive shafts, or even a complete diff, just a bare casing with the nose extension should be enough. And to be honest Mk1 or Mk2 bits would also probably be OK.

I'm too far away really (South Oxfordshire) to help.

Interesting that you're currently in Egypt. That would explain the IP address you registered from being in Cairo! I did think twice about authorising your new account (we've had rather a lot of rogue ones recently) but everything else looked OK. I'm glad I did now!

Cheers,
Mike.

As the intention is to get the shell mobile, I'm not sure how the rear wheels would attach - the hub usually comes with a drive shaft attached. Never in 40 years of Triumph ownership have I ever had (or come across) a rear hub without the drive shaft attached, especially used!

If buying used, the chances are that most diffs are complete with their innards, unless you are lucky enough to find a transmission repairer with a spare casing...

As it's a MK1, then it would make real sense to get Mk1 swinging arms, diff and subframe sections, otherwise it is doubling up on the expense and the work involved. Unless of course the intention is to fit MK2 rear suspension?

This is of course true, however I have a number of hubs separated from the drive shaft at the UJ.

I've also a number of diffs that have the crown wheel and pinion 'picked-up'. These are no good without a rebuild and anyway without the drive shaft it wouldn't turn. True, I don't have any empty diff cases!

I believe the intention of the OP was to just to be able to move the shell so he could get it home. I was just trying to give a number of other options on top of your pretty comprehensive list!

Cheers,
Mike.
