mk1 steel wheel

Mk1 rims are very narrow at I think 4.5J. Mk2 steel rims are wider and are either 5J . This from memory and someone else will be able to confirm the exact dims. I have a set of Mk2 rims which still take the Mk1 hub caps and embellishers which are free for you to collect if you want them. Bonus is that I am near Folkestone, Kent. Depends on how original you want to go. I find the stabilty of a Mk1 is far better with the Mk2 wheels!

@jonnydog - that excellent! many thanks. That's just what I need - my lower dash trim panel search begins. Had a quick look under the dash to see lots of cut wires and dangly bits (including several empty bulb holders just hanging loose), so scope to tidy up the wiring and hopefully prevent any issues in the future.

@charles H - yes please re wheels! Its more the original 'look' I'm after - my cars been hacked around too much over the years to go for the 'rolled off the production line' angle but I can try to get back to what it used to look like (by changing wheels and dash for example!). I'm in Ashford once a week. Happy to fit around you for collection.

I'm not promising, but I know I have various upper and lower Mk1 dash trim sections, although I would have to check whether I have any early lower sections. I can let you know by the weekend if you can't locate one elsewhere....
As you probably are aware, the Mk1 dash trim is bolted and glued to the metal dash structure, and it is quite time consuming to remove it without damage, but is quite doable with care. The dash on a Mk2 comes out as one unit, whereas the Mk1 is basically a trim covering over the fixed metalwork forming the dash.

Thanks. I'm in no rush - currently she sits on TR6 wheel as per photo so very usable 'as is', I'd just like to get her back on original wheels at some point!

Good question re dash. Its a pre facelift Mk1 (built 1964, registered in 1965) and dash currently looks like the photo so I assume I need the whole lower section which includes around the steering wheel. I'd also like a pre face lift steering wheel but I suspect they are quite rare now and I can see people on facebook have all sorts of hassle with steering wheels so my plan is to sort the dash and then do the steering wheel later. Looks like someone must have blanked off the vents (?) and cut out the section to add the gauges. I haven't taken the panel off yet to see what lurks behind but hopefully the vents can be reconnected and wiring tidied up when I have the dash off.

Many thanks. Search online has drawn a blank so far so I would be interested in knowing if you had one / how much. Previous owner has also fitted extra warning lights above the indicator lights which might account for the 'spare' bulb holders stuffed up behind the dashboard (which I suspect are the original bulb holders for all my warning lights) and the fact I've never seen a warning light come on except the red ignition light... why someone thought it easier to drill and fit extra warning lights rather than fix the ones in the dash I suspect I'll never know! I'll get a photo - it must have been a 'dash out' fix that took some planning!

Will do. Once wheels swapped over, my TR6 versions become surplus to requirements.

Wheels fitted (thank you Charles).

I had to file down the lead weights on the back of the rims to stop them fouling the track rod ends on both front wheels. I guessed altering the weights wouldn't make any difference at the sort of speeds I get up to! I was surprised there isn't more clearance between the wheel rim edge and the track rod though ?

Just wheel trims to fit now which appear extremely tight, especially when the outer trim is over the lead weights on the front face of the wheel - I guess brut strength and a soft hammer are the order of the day - got too cold and tired to sort today but weekend should see it done ..

Hi All - Just to finish this thread - photo taken today of the wheels plus sparkly trims on the car.

A huge thanks to Charles for the rims. Outer wheel trim from CW and centre caps from ebay.

That's one job finished, but with classic car ownership there is always another job round the corner ... on the way to take the photos the glass fell out of the drivers side wing mirror!!

The 1966 Mk1 I had (be around 33 years ago!) was Wedgwood which in my opinion suits them. Whilst owners like to it their personal touch on a car, keeping them standard is my preference. Well doneToby! It looks well!
