Re packing front hubs with grease
In the Haynes Manuel it says to re pack the front hub bearings after a certain milage ( can’t remember how many but 60000 rings a bell ) is it really necessary I can’t remember ever doing it on the PI I had in the early eighties.
Re: Re packing front hubs with grease
The grease in the front hubs / bearings does dry out with age.
It is worth repacking them periodically with fresh LM (or equivalent) grease.
It is very easy to do with the fronts being taper roller bearings. The procedure will be outlined in Haynes.
Points to bear in mind -
Clean off as much old grease as you can before repacking.
Don't over pack them with grease.
Tighten the castillated nut finger tight only, and then back off slightly to the nearest hole for the split pin, rather than tightening.
A small amount of play is acceptable and advised due to the taper roller bearing design.
P.S. old school MOT testers will no doubt agree on having slight play with this type of wheel bearing, although young unsympathetic testers not used to older classic cars may have a different view!!
